New Multi-Imaging Flexible Machine Vision Camera Lens
AUBURN, NY, August 15, 2003- Volpi Manufacturing USA announced the availability of a new type of camera lens that allows a single camera to capture multiple views of a single object or images of multiple parts using a single camera. Especially suited to the latest high-resolution "SMART" cameras, the lens dubbed the Poly Optical Fiber Device(TM) (POFD) allows one camera to see up to eight (8) different views through flexible coherent fiber-optic image guides.
The POFD can reduce cost associated with multiple cameras but of more importance, it can increase the speed of inspections because of reduced image acquisition time. Thinner than a camera cable, the POFD can image in locations where cameras would never fit.
Machine vision inspection applications include:
o Inspecting 360 degrees a of bottle closure at high speed
o Inspecting the complete circumference of a tube or wire
o Verifying the assembly of critical items on multiple sides in major appliance manufacturing
o Aligning small fiducials separated by a large distance in electronic assembly
o Inspecting locations where a direct camera view is obscured by fixtures or automation
Each POFD fiber leg can be up to 20 feet (6m) long and is 0.080 inch (2mm) in diameter. Image guides can be either 10,000 or 30,000 pixel resolution. The fiber legs can also transmit light via illumination fibers arranged in a ring around the image guide for smaller fields-of-view. A complete POFD is in the range of $6-8K US.
