CAM Software offers user-defined features.

Press Release Summary:

FeatureCAM v10 can be tailored to customer's specific design requirements. It automatically creates operations from part features containing all necessary machining parameters. As well as defining shapes, features also contain machining operations required to achieve shape. User can decide which dimensions are updated when user-defined feature (UDF) is created. FeatureCAM automatically selects tools, calculates feeds and speeds, generates toolpaths, and creates NC code.

User-Defined Features Expands FeatureCAM Technology and Ease of Use

EASTEC 2003 - Booth 1608

Salt Lake City, UT - February 24, 2003 - Engineering Geometry Systems, developer of feature-based CAD/CAM software, will be extending their powerful feature-based CNC programming technology to include user-defined features as part of FeatureCAM Version 10. An introduction to the user-defined features (UDFs) will be demonstrated in the FeatureCAM Booth 1608 at EASTEC 2003, May 20-22 in W. Springfield, Massachusetts. UDFs will allow FeatureCAM customers to expand the robust selection of standard features already available in FeatureCAM, by customizing their own unique features and including them in the list of features for later use. UDFs can define virtually any 3D shape with the only limitation being your imagination.

"FeatureCAM can be tailored to a customer's specific design requirements, making FeatureCAM even easier to use. For example, if a customer manufactures families of parts or uses a specialized feature like a pulley groove, they can create a whole set of features with associated tool path parameters to suit their own design and programming needs and then access them from the standard feature dialog within FeatureCAM ," says Tom McCollough, Vice President of Software Development at EGS. "This results in reduced training requirements, fewer errors during part programming, shorter part programming times and enhanced revenues."

Feature-based programming is faster than operations-based programming because the features contain all of the necessary programming information. Features define the shapes used as building blocks for parts. Unlike static shapes saved in a part library, UDFs are created dynamically. The user can decide which dimensions are updated when the UDF is created. As well as defining shapes, features also contain the machining operations required to achieve that shape. With a UDF, the customer has control over the types of passes and order of passes used to machine the feature. Once a part's features are defined, FeatureCAM automatically selects the tools, calculates the feeds and speeds, generates efficient toolpaths and creates the NC code.

With the breakthrough enhancement of user-defined features, FeatureCAM customers will have an even more powerful tool for completely customizing and automating their programming process.
