Cable Connector incorporates captive hardware.

Press Release Summary:

Power SwivelNut (PSN), with ¼-20 brass and 3/8-16 stainless steel rotating threaded nuts, is UL approved. Unit consists of 2 parts: tellurium copper crimp barrel providing gas-tight connection to power cable, and rotating threaded head that attaches to barrel. Product eliminates need for cable to make 90° bend in order to attach power supply or circuit breaker studs. For PSN operating at 100 A, voltage drop increases from 5 mV to 20 mV if unscrewed by 1 full turn.

Cableco's Improved Power SwivelNut(TM) Cable Connector Incorporates Captive Hardware, Maintains Good Conduction When Accidentally Loosened

Dublin, California, December 3, 2002 --- Cableco Technologies has introduced an improved version of the Power SwivelNut (PSN) connector with ¼-20 brass and 3/8-16 stainless steel rotating threaded nuts for improved strength. The PSN is UL approved.

The PSN consists of two parts. A tellurium copper crimp barrel provides a gas-tight connection to the power cable. The rotating threaded head is attached to the barrel. When tightened onto a threaded stud, the crimp barrel base is locked against the stud, securing the electrical connection.

The Power SwivelNut was designed to satisfy OEM requests for a high current termination consisting of completely captive hardware that eliminates the production problem of dropped washers and screws which must be retrieved from the bottom of a system cabinet. Even though it costs slightly more, captive hardware eliminates costly production stoppages while technicians retrieve hardware from the bottom of system enclosures.

The PSN has a small diameter with very little radial overhang, so that multiple terminations can be mounted parallel to and very close to one another without the danger of a loose ring lug rotating and shorting to an adjacent lug. The PSN also often eliminates the need for cable to make a space-consuming 90° bend, typical with a ring lug connector, in order to attach to power supply or circuit breaker studs.

The PSN will maintain reasonably good conduction if loosened. Tests show that the resistance increases by a factor of 3-4 if unscrewed by one full turn. For a typical PSN operating at 100A, the voltage drop increases from 5mV to just over 20mV. This is sufficiently low to allow most systems to operate until the screw can be re-tightened.

"The Power SwivelNut was developed to address an increasing OEM demand to connect power cables to threaded studs using fully-captive hardware." explained Keith Carver, Director of Engineering. "Our customers just don't want to have loose hardware at the bottom of their system cabinet. The Power SwivelNut solves this problem."

Power SwivelNuts will fit cables ranging from 12 awg to 4/0 awg, with threads ranging from 10-32 to 3/8-16 plus M5 to M10 metric threads. Samples are available and production quantities are available in 2 to 4 weeks. Pricing ranges from $1.80 / termination for smaller sizes to $6.00 / termination for larger sizes.
