C&M Produces Silicon Overmolded Cable Assemblies for Medical Products
Overmolded, hermetically sealed cable connectors are autoclavable
WAUREGAN, CONN. Oct. 15, 2004-C&M Corporation, manufacturer of high-performance cables and assemblies, has developed a new capability for overmolding silicone to cable connectors. The result is a hermetically sealed assembly with a tightly adhering, molded silicone layer. Silicone is especially suited for medical applications because it can withstand being subjected to sterilization utilizing a steam or chemical autoclaving process.
This new capability is an outgrowth of C&M's extensive background in overmolding other plastics such as PVC and polyurethane to cable terminations for mechanical strength, strain relief and/or flex protection.
C&M can take this a step further and design the exterior of the overmold to mate with an opening in an equipment chassis, for example, to form a watertight barrier. As an alternative, C&M can mold separate silicone grommets or washers for this purpose.
The key to such designs, says C&M's Regional Sales Manager Greg Jonas, is "our concurrent engineering. We can work cooperatively with customers to design a whole assembly that will fit and function just as they need."
Another advantage of using C&M, according to Jonas, is the company's vertical integration, which encompasses the cable manufacturing, connector assembly and overmolding operation in one cost-effective production flow.
