Single-Inductor High Power Buck-Boost DC/DC Controller

Milpitas, CA - March 30, 2005 - Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LTC3780, a high performance buck-boost switching regulator controller that operates from input voltages above, below or equal to the output voltage. Until now, high power buck-boost circuits have relied on transformers or two DC/DC converters - one for step-up (boost) and the other for step-down (buck) conversion. The LTC3780 operates using a single inductor and can deliver output power as high as 75W; a 4-switch synchronous rectification delivers efficiencies up to 97%. The constant frequency current mode architecture allows a phase-lockable frequency of up to 400kHz. With a wide 4V to 30V (36V max) input and 0.8V to 30V output range and seamless transitions between operating modes, the LTC3780 is ideal for automotive, telecom and battery-powered systems.

The LTC3780 employs a proprietary current control architecture for constant frequency operation in buck or boost mode. In addition, fault protection is provided for overvoltage, over current and short circuit conditions in all operating modes. A power good output open-drain pin signals whether the output voltage is in or out of regulation. The LTC3780 offers three operating modes: constant frequency, Burst Mode" Operation, and discontinous current.

The LTC3780 is offered in 24-lead SSOP and 5mmx5mm QFN packages. 1,000-piece price starts at $4.65 each.
