Mikron Bostomatic Introduces HSM 800 High Speed Machining Center for Large Formats

New Unit Delivers Cost Effective, High-Speed Machining of Large, Heavyweight Workpieces

HOLLISTON, Mass., Nov. 4, 2002 -Mikron Bostomatic Corporation has introduced a new dimension in high-speed machining technology. The new Mikron HSM 800 is intelligently designed for high-speed machining of heavy workpieces up to 2,200 pounds with up to 1.7 g acceleration in three dimensions.

The bridge-type Mikron HSM 800 is suitable for wet, dry or graphite machining. Designed for automation, it features a four-position pallet changer making it highly suitable for economical, around-the-clock, unmanned operation. Wide, three-sided access to the workspace allows for unobstructed crane loading of heavy work pieces.

The unique single casting (monoblock) construction provides the superior machine strength and stability essential for high speed machining. The patented, concrete polymer base of the HSM 800 provides outstanding rigidity, exceptionally high thermal stability, and up to six times more vibration dampening ability than cast iron structures. The result is excellent work piece surface quality and accuracy.

To move large work pieces with high accelerations, the HSM 800 features widely spaced guideways that withstand the forces of high speed machining. A liquid cooled spindle motor with hybrid ceramic ball bearings delivers extremely short run-up and braking times as well as high power and high torque over the entire speed range. Spindle choices include a high torque 30,000-rpm spindle, suitable for roughing or finishing operations, or 13.4 HP, 42,000-rpm spindle.

The HSM 800 is equipped with compact, dynamic axes reinforced by strong ribbing plus ball screws and water-cooled drive motors that are thermally separate. All ball screws have bearings on each side to generate maximum feed rates.

Several types of standard pallet systems are available, plus customer-selectable tool magazines with choices of 15 to 68 tools. The HSM 800 features a built-in standard laser measurement system to monitor lengths and radii of tooling and the standard linear measuring system, with glass scales, ensures long-term, high positional accuracy.

The HSM 800 is equipped with a powerful Heidenhain TNC 530 control system to enhance performance. The system offers a host of standard features, including 3D graphics, advanced high-speed functions, 3D cutter compensation, a 1.5 Gigabyte hard drive and Ethernet interface.

Mikron Bostomatic Corporation, a subsidiary of Agie Charmilles Group, the world's leading system provider to the tool and moldmaking industry, provides sales, service, parts and technical support of Mikron and Bostomatic high speed, high performance machining centers, the industry's widest range of machines, with travel ranges from 15 through 54 inches, spindle speeds up to 60,000-rpm, in a multitude of three-, four- and five-axis configurations for die/mold, job shop, aerospace, medical, electronic and other high precision applications. Headquartered just west of Boston, the company maintains fully equipped, state-of-the-art technology centers in Holliston,
