Brewer Bruce & Johnson's Marina Purchases Marine Travelift 50 VFM II for Its Branford, Connecticut, Facility

Marina Has Been a Marine Travelift Customer for More Than 40 Years; New 50-Ton Hoist Replaces 50 AMO and Works Alongside Two 15 BFMs

STURGEON BAY, WI – Marine Travelift Inc. has announced that Brewer Bruce & Johnson's Marina of Branford, Connecticut, recently took delivery of a new 50 BFM II mobile boat hoist to replace a 40-year-old Marine Travelift 50 AMO. Installed in February, the new machine is now working alongside two Marine Travelift 15-ton mobile boat hoists.

The marina is part of Brewer Yacht Yards & Marinas which began in 1964. Jack Brewer acquired the Brewer Post Road Boat Yard located behind the original Brewer chandlery, allowing them to provide more services to more boaters. The boatyard became known as one of the premier boatyards in the area, and today it is one of 22 Brewer marinas across Connecticut, New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Maine.

Brewer Bruce & Johnson's Marina's new Marine Travelift 50 BFM II features a Cummins diesel engine, sound suppression kit on the engine compartment, wireless remote, twospeed hoists and a sailboat top beam extension. This extension is an important option, as it saves a significant amount of time and manpower, ensuring that the marina’s operations will become even more efficient.

During sailboat lifting, the backstay or forestay can interfere with a mobile boat hoist's top beam. With Marine Travelift's innovative sailboat top beam extension, the top beam is moved forward, providing additional clearance while the boat is suspended in the slings. With this feature, a shipyard can lift a much larger number of sailboats without needing to adjust the vessels' rigging.

There's no need to dismantle the forestay, which reduces stress on the mast and gives greater ground clearance to the keel during lifting. In addition, the sailboat top beam extension is a major benefit when lifting power vessels with forward-mounted superstructures.

Another important option is the Marine Travelift 50 BFM II's wireless remote control, which has an impressive range of 300 feet. The wireless remote gives the operator increased visibility of the boat, launch piers and surrounding area, which improves operational safety and ensures maximum maneuverability.

To maintain consistency and provide an extra measure of efficiency and safety, the wireless remote control unit is laid out in the same format as the controls in the operator cab. This provides critical mechanical back-up in the event the transmitter is damaged. According to Jack Anderson of Norwell, Massachusetts-based Marine Travelift dealer Martin Walter Company, Brewer Yacht Yards & Marinas is an important Marine Travelift customer.

"Marine Travelift solutions are in use at the majority of BYY locations," Anderson said, "and Brewer Bruce & Johnson’s Marina has been a Marine Travelift customer for more than 40 years."

The marina purchased its original Marine Travelift machine, a 9-ton AMO, in 1970. The facility's next purchase, a 50-ton AMO, started work in Branford in June 1973. It was joined by two Marine Travelift 15 BFM mobile boat hoists, the first arriving in 1986 and the second in 2005.

General Manager John McMahon has been with Brewer Bruce & Johnson's Marina since 1971, and he said there are two key reasons why the operation has continued to partner with Marine Travelift over the years: good product, and excellent service from Martin Walter Company.

"Todd Krause of Martin Walter Company has always been outstanding at solving any problems that develop, and in a very timely fashion," McMahon explained. "It's the main reason we haven't looked elsewhere."
