BigFix Expands Security Configuration Management Coverage to Apple Macintosh Intel Processor-Based Systems

Single Agent, Single Infrastructure for Real-Time Visibility and Control of Linux, Mac OS, Microsoft Windows, and Unix Desktop, Mobile and Server ComputersEMERYVILLE, Calif., March 13 -- BigFix, the leading provider of enterprise security configuration management solutions, has extended support for the recently announced Apple Mac OS X systems based on Intel processors. The new BigFix capabilities mean that Apple Intel processor-based computers can be centrally managed using the same BigFix Agent and configuration management infrastructure that covers Apple PowerPC processor-based Mac OS, Linux, Microsoft Windows, and Unix desktop, mobile and server computers. The move aligns with BigFix's strategy of simplifying, reducing costs and increasing effectiveness of enterprise information security, compliance and system management programs by providing a single infrastructure that provides seamless, transparent real-time visibility and control in heterogeneous distributed systems environments.

While the Windows operating system-based systems have historically attracted the lion's share of virus, worm and spyware attacks due to their widespread use in enterprise environments, hackers are increasingly targeting other operating systems and their application software. Recent vulnerabilities announced in Mac OS X and applications demonstrate that any computing platform can be compromised and is a potential entry point into the organization and its proprietary data. In its November 2005 report on the top 20 Internet security vulnerabilities, security research firm SANS Institute expanded its list to vulnerabilities pertaining to non-Windows operating systems. It is also true that non-Windows machines are often the primary infrastructure for mission-critical data and business processes such as supply chain, accounting/finance, human resources, customer relationship management, and product design/engineering, making them especially attractive targets for external attack or internal abuse.

BigFix Comment

"From the beginning, we designed the BigFix technology platform as a scalable and secure solution for reporting and managing the configuration of distributed computers from a single control point, over a single infrastructure, using a single intelligent agent," said Gregory Toto, vice president of product management at BigFix. "Adding Intel processor-based Macintosh support brings an important new platform under the BigFix umbrella and further extends our customers' ability to efficiently manage the security and configuration of all of their computing assets."
