Agilent Technologies Enhances ParBERT Platform with 3.35 Gb/s Capabilities that Lower Cost of Test for R&D, Manufacturing

ANAHIEM, Calif., OFC 2002, March 18, 2002 -- Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today announced that it has enhanced its 81250 ParBERT platform by adding new modules to include 3.35 Gb/s optical, electrical generator and analyzer capabilities. The enhanced platform enables R&D and manufacturing engineers in the semiconductor and communications industries to validate the latest wireline devices (3.35 Gb) while simultaneously reducing cost of test.

The Agilent 81250 ParBERT platform is a modular parallel bit-error ratio test (BERT) solution ideal for high-speed digital and optical component testing. In addition to extensive hardware capabilities, the platform utilizes powerful analysis software to test parallel electrical, optical and electro-optical converter modules and components. This test platform is a key tool for R&D and manufacturing test engineers aiming to increase the reliability and speed of optical components and networks. The ability to add modules, such as the 3.35 Gb enhancements, enables customers to ensure that their test capabilities keep pace with advances in optical technology while minimizing additional costs of test.

"The Agilent ParBERT platform is already the fastest parallel BERT solution available, and these updates keep it on the cutting edge so that customers can adapt to constant changes in optical technology," said Siegfried Gross, general manager of Agilent's Boeblingen Verification Solutions. "Customers can use these new modules to make necessary validations of 3.35 Gb devices and get fully tested products to market at little extra cost."

The newly enhanced 81250 ParBERT platform is ideal for:

- 10 Gb Ethernet testing (generation and analysis capabilities up to 3.35 Gb and 10.8 Gb);
- characterizing cross-point switches (jitter performance and pulse fidelity);
- characterizing transmission systems (jitter generation);
- simple, fast manufacturing testing of new Very Short Reach (VSR) electro-optical transceivers (up to 3.35 Gb/s); and
- verifying new SerDes Framer Interface (SFI-5) components and modules.

The 81250 ParBERT can perform multiplexer and demultiplexer testing for telecommunications; system area network IC, multiple transmitter and receiver testing in manufacturing; and forward-error-correction device testing. Also, the fast eye-mask measurement offers a quick pass/fail test capability for manufacturing.

U.S. Pricing and AvailabilityA typical ParBERT system starts at approximately $150,000. An electrical 3.35 Gb/s generator and analyzer pair is priced at approximately $30,000 and is available now. An optical/electrical generator and analyzer pair is priced at approximately $40,000 and can be ordered now for shipment in May.
