Behlman' Power Solutions Help Extend the Useful Service Life of the USAF RC-135 Rivet Joint Surveillance Aircraft
Hauppauge, NY - Behlman Electronics Inc., known for its leadership in providing power products for military, industrial, and commercial applications, has received a follow-on order for its COTS DCMA power supplies with special performance features that made them the winning choice for planned missions on the USAF RC-135 Rivet Joint all-weather surveillance aircraft.
USAF RC-135V/W Rivet Joint aircraft are equipped with an extensive array of sophisticated intelligence-gathering equipment enabling military specialists to monitor the electronic activity of adversaries. Also known as "RJ," the aircraft are sometimes called "hogs" due to the extended "hog nose" and "hog cheeks." Rivet Joint aircraft were widely used in the 1990s -- during Desert Storm, the occupation of Haiti, and over Bosnia. Using automated and manual equipment, electronic and intelligence specialists can precisely locate, record and analyze much of what is being done in the electromagnetic spectrum.
It has been reported that the Air Force plans to spend at least $1.4 billion to keep the RC-135 Rivet Joint fleet flying through 2018. It will provide information about the locations and intentions of enemy forces; warnings of threatening activity; and broadcast a variety of direct voice communications. High priorities are combat advisory broadcasts and imminent threat warnings that can be sent direct to aircraft in danger, as well as operating both data and voice links to provide target information to US ground-based air defense.

Behlman's DMCA4000 COTS power supplies are rugged, highly reliable 4,000-watt switch mode units built for high-end industrial and military applications. For airborne applications they are powered from three-phase AC aircraft power and provide outputs at +3.3 VDC, +5 VDC, + 12 VDC, - 12 VDC and - 28 VDC. These ultra-sturdy power supplies are built to endure the rigors of mission-critical applications, and are designed to meet the input power requirements of MIL-STD-704. At 4.5"H x 16" W x 21.5" D and weighing only 33.5 lbs, these rack-mounted power supplies readily accommodate the tight quarters typically found in airborne, shipboard and mobile applications.
Deliveries of Behlman DCMA COTS power supplies, valued in excess of $530,000, are expected to continue on a scheduled basis through the second quarter of 2011.
