BASF's Puradd(TM) Gasoline Additives Now Branded as Keropur® Products

FLORHAM PARK, NJ, July 2, 2009 - BASF, a leading global provider of fuel performance additives for the petroleum industry, has re-named its Puradd product line in North America as Keropur. The name change is consistent with the global branding of BASF's fuel additives, which are sold under the KeroLine® brand in other regions.

The name change will not affect raw materials, manufacturing processes, specifications or product performance.

"As an umbrella brand, KeroLine brings together all BASF products for the automotive and refinery industry. The name is easy to pronounce and understandable internationally," said Markus Kamieth, Ph.D., Group Vice President, Performance Chemicals, for BASF in North America. "It will also create closer allegiance to the other Kero product brands to make them more memorable for our customers."

Keropur gasoline additives keep a car's engine clean and running properly by reducing the build-up of deposits on fuel injectors and intake valves, which helps improve a car's performance and drivability.

"When gasoline is heated and mixes with oxygen, it forms deposits that can stick to the metal surfaces in the engine. Build-ups of these deposits can affect the performance of your engine," said Alfred Jung, Ph.D., Technical Services Manager, Performance Chemicals-Automotive and Refinery Industry for BASF in North America.

Keropur additives are injected into gasoline by fuel marketers prior to distribution to retail outlets. The terminals inject the additives at various treat rates, depending on the requirements of the retailer and the handling capabilities of the injection equipment.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires all gasoline to be treated with minimum levels of detergency additives. BASF believes treat rates higher than the EPA minimum - known as the Lowest Additive Concentration (LAC) - are more effective at reducing the build-up of deposits and improving a car's performance and drivability.

"Keropur additives form a protective barrier to keep the carburetor, injectors, intake manifold and intake valves free of deposits - as long as the product is continuously used at adequate levels," said Jung.

A growing number of auto manufacturers and gasoline marketers share the belief that higher levels of detergency are better for car engines and ultimately the environment, too. The "Top Tier" Detergent Gasoline program, initiated by several of the world's leading automakers, promotes a higher standard than the one required by the EPA, and recognizes a number of retailers for meeting that standard.

Keropur fuel additives are a key element of BASF performance packages that promote cleaner engines for lower maintenance cost, improved fuel economy and drivability and fewer harmful emissions for a better environment.

Unlike some products available on the market, Keropur additives are made with a proprietary chemistry that enables a purer, cleaner and high performing detergent.

BASF offers a Web site, www2.basf.us/performancechemical/keropur, designed specifically to promote the benefits of gasoline detergency additives to fuel retailers and consumers in North America.
