Fujitsu Announces WiMAX Baseband Device for Mobile PCs

Enables WiMAX USB Dongles of just 20 x 40mm to be realised

Langen, Germany and Barcelona, Spain, 16th February 2009 - Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe (FME) today announces the MB86K23, a Mobile WiMAX baseband device targeting the expanding mobile PC market. MB86K23 is the next-generation of the successful MB86K21, which targeted embedded WiMAX in mobile PCs or in WiMAX PC cards and which has been certified by the WiMAX Forum(TM).

MB86K23 allows a 60% reduction in chip-set area compared to its predecessor. When combined into a chip-set with FME's RF device, MB86K52, and power management device, MB39C316, very small form-factors can be realised - 20 x 40mm for WiMAX USB dongles or 30 x 26.8mm for PCI Express Half-Mini Cards containing both WiMAX and Wi-Fi functionality. ODM vendors are already planning to release such products using this WiMAX baseband device. The use of 65nm process technology in the manufacture of the MB86K23 enables a 36% reduction in power consumption during operation compared to the MB86K21.

Mobile WiMAX is the highly anticipated next-generation broadband wireless technology, with service having started in the USA in 2008, and planned to start in Japan and Taiwan during 2009. With the expansion of the WiMAX service area, anywhere, anytime, high-speed Internet access will become a reality. In the near future, it is expected that mobile PCs will come with WiMAX functionality built-in as standard.

Key features of the MB86K23

o Low power consumption due to 65nm CMOS and power gating technologies

The MB86K23 is manufactured in 65nm CMOS technology that provides a 36% reduction in power consumption during operation compared to the previous generation product. In addition, the power gating technology 'CoolAdjust-PG'(*1), which was jointly developed with Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd., has been used in this device. This allows power to be switched-off to circuit blocks that aren't in use, enabling the standby current of the complete WiMAX module to be kept down to 0.5mA, which will allow a longer battery life for mobile WiMAX devices.

o Allows small form-factors for mobile devices

The MB86K23 reduces the chip-set area by 60% compared to the previous generation product. Even smaller form-factor WiMAX devices can be realised when the device is combined with Fujitsu Microelectronics' RF device, MB86K52, and power management device, MB39C316. The MB86K23 contains a USB interface enabling WiMAX USB dongles to be developed in form-factors of 20 x 40mm. Or it would be possible to fit both WiMAX and Wi-Fi functionality into a PCI Express Half-Mini Card with a form-factor of 30 x 26.8mm.

Availability

Sample shipments of the MB86K23 will commence from April 2009.

*1. Power Gating Technology 'CoolAdjust-PG' is a technology used to temporarily switch power off to blocks of circuits that aren't in use, and to reduce leak current. Fujitsu Microelectronics calls on its power management technologies for low power, 'CoolAdjust', with the power gating technology, 'CoolAdjust-PG', being one of them.
