Original Press Release:

New Low Cost, Handheld Bar Code Reader with LED Light Source Is Safe for Users' Eyes

The laser light sources used in most handheld barcode readers
pose a danger to the user's eyes. The new BL-80 barcode reader
from Keyence employs an LED light source that is extremely safe
and completely capable of reading barcode widths up to 82 mm
(3.23 in) with bars as thin as 0.125 mm (0.005 in). This covers
virtually all of the barcode types currently in existence.

The new BL-80 has a wide range of production, packaging,
inspection and assembly applications in a broad range of
manufacturing industries including: automotive, pharmaceutical,
appliance, metalworking, plastics, semiconductor, wire and cable, and more. Barcode data can be directly entered into
a PC, without special software, enabling workers to quickly access component assembly instructions on-line from barcodes mounted on products. Various production line sensor detection settings can be switched instantly and remotely by scanning barcodes containing setting data. The handheld BL-80 permits instant identification of moving parts on assembly lines and much more.

In operation the reflected beam of the BL-80 is transmitted to a CCD element inside the reader. Further, the BL-80 connects directly to a PC for data transmission without the need for software. The BL-80 Series can include a DOS keyboard interface type, an RS-232 type or an RS-232 type to connect to other Keyence products.

Setup for the BL-80 series is fast and simple. The operator's manual contains a printout of a broad range of barcode types and the user merely scans the desired bar code type: the rest of the setup is automatic.

Additional features include a double-reading-prevention function that prevents multiple readings of the same bar code. Also, the trigger switch is provided with a selection of five LED illumination modes that can: control when the LED can be turned on or off, permit continuous illumination, or, alternatively, toggle the LED on and off.
