Backup Software protects critical data on daily basis.

Press Release Summary:

Built on Axion enterprise data protection software, NDMP Backup Accelerator helps customers back up and recover critical data residing on Network Appliance filers. Program accepts backup data from NetApp filer and performs data de-duplication in real-time. After initial full backup, subsequent backups move and store only incremental changes from filer. Businesses can replicate filer and heterogeneous client backup data from remote location using existing WAN bandwidth.

Avamar Releases Enhanced NDMP Backup Accelerator for Network Appliance (NetApp) Filers

Up to 10x Faster Daily Full NetApp Filer Backups and Simplified Disaster Recovery

IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 8 /-- Avamar Technologies, Inc. a leading provider of enterprise data protection software, today announced an enhanced version of its NDMP Backup Accelerator, designed to eliminate customer challenges around quickly and efficiently backing up and recovering critical data residing on Network Appliance (NetApp) filers. Enterprise organizations have deployed thousands of NetApp filers, but traditional NDMP backup methods often exceed backup windows. The Avamar NDMP Backup Accelerator enables organizations to quickly and reliably protect filer data in order to meet short backup windows and strict service level agreements. Avamar's patented data reduction technologies allow NetApp customers to fully protect critical filer data on a daily basis, replicate data to a remote location for disaster recovery if needed, and reduce overall storage costs.

"This is a no-brainer," said Tony Asaro, senior analyst for Enterprise Strategy Group. "Anyone that has a NetApp NAS system should take a serious look at Avamar's NDMP Accelerator. We can attest to the fact that Avamar significantly increases backup performance over local and remote networks. And their claim of up to 10x faster NetApp backups is very achievable. This is a big problem solver."

"Our latest release of NDMP Accelerator provides significant cost savings by dramatically reducing the required network bandwidth and backup storage compared to solutions from Network Appliance," said Rory Bolt, CTO of Avamar Technologies. "And unlike other solutions, Avamar can recover data to a filer or alternate client with a single restore operation. Every Avamar backup creates a full backup image that can be immediately restored, so the administrator is never required to perform multi-step recovery involving full and subsequent incremental backups."

Built on the award-winning Avamar Axion enterprise data protection software, the Avamar NDMP Accelerator dramatically reduces the amount of time required to perform daily full filer backups. Traditional filer backup processes include daily incremental and weekly full backup operations. However, because of the volume of data and the NDMP protocol, this approach often results in full backups that exceed the allowed backup window. Avamar dramatically reduces the amount of time required to perform full filer backups by accepting backup data from the NetApp filer and performing data de- duplication in real-time. After an initial full backup, subsequent backups move and store only incremental changes from the filer. Axion then merges any changes from the last incremental backup to create a full backup that's restorable in a single operation. As a result, Avamar enables daily full filer backups that are up to 10 times faster than those obtained using traditional methods.

Cost-effective disaster recovery for NetApp filers is another option with Avamar. Since only unique data segments are transferred, the Axion NDMP Accelerator can be located hundreds of miles away from the Axion Server. As a result, Avamar enables businesses to cost-effectively replicate both filer and heterogeneous client backup data from a remote location using existing WAN bandwidth in support of disaster recovery objectives.

In addition, Avamar seamlessly integrates with existing tape environments by offering a number of options for archiving data from Axion to tape, including direct tape output, media server tape output and checkpoint backups. Once data is archived to tape, it can be restored directly from tape to the appropriate client(s). The direct tape output method supports popular backup software from vendors including Symantec/VERITAS, EMC Legato, IBM, and CommVault. By utilizing Axion to perform daily full backups and using tape-based solutions for periodic archival, the number of required tapes and backup or media servers can also be dramatically reduced.
