Automation Software helps link CAE systems.

Press Release Summary:

Step 7 basic package v5.3 and Step 7 Professional 2005 provide XML interface for exchanging data with CAE systems. Able to generate hardware configuration from imported data, engineering software also includes functions that are in line with FDA requirements. Linked to Simatic Logon tool, software makes it possible to assign specific user privileges for accessing Step 7 projects. To synchronize the data, software provides change management system.

Original Press Release:

Linking CAE Systems Efficiently with Automation Software

Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) has added new functions to its Step 7 engineering software. The new version of the Simatic Step 7 basic package and Step 7 Professional 2005 contain an XML interface for exchanging data with CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) systems. In addition, both engineering packages will be expanded to include functions which are in line with FDA (Food and Drug Administration) requirements. Linked to the Simatic Logon tool, it is now possible to assign specific user privileges for accessing Step 7 projects.

Regarding the importing and exporting of data, Step 7 V5.3 SP 3 is being expanded to include an XML interface in order e.g. to enable simple transfer of data from CAE systems. Step 7 automatically generates the so-called "hardware configuration" from the imported CAE data. The XML Standard, a vendor-independent meta language, is used as data transfer format. When CAE data is imported, the user is supported by plaintext messages to enable the data to be adapted in the event of data conflicts or gaps. Automatic data matching during the course of a project saves a significant amount of overhead when construction documents and the hardware configuration of the automation system are developed further independently of one another. To synchronize the data, Step 7 provides an efficient change management system. This is important, for example, at the commissioning phase, where long delays can result if the user has forgotten to make changes to the data. Shipping of Simatic Step 7 V5.3 SP 3 and Step 7 Professional 2005 is planned for August 2005.
