Next-Generation ATCA: Kontron Presents a New ATCA Server Blade

The first ATCA board for the AMC specification and the first AMC AM4001 from Kontron

Kaufbeuren, March 23, 2005. Kontron is introducing the next generation after its Server Blade AT8000: the AdvancedTCA Server Blade AT8001. It is the first ATCA board on the market to support the AMC (Advanced Mezzanine Card, PICMG AMC.x) specification and offers space for two AMC modules on a single processor board. Correspondingly, Kontron is presenting its first AMC with the AM4001. It guarantees adaptation to the widest range of applications and fulfills the telecommunications manufacturers' high availability requirements. The use of AMC modules on corresponding carriers significantly increases scalability and flexibility in terms of system development and, most important, enables a smooth transition from proprietary to standardized systems in the telecommunications industry. Compared to previous telecom backbone systems, ATCA is faster, fault-tolerant and easier to service. As a result of standardization, ATCA counteracts cost pressure in the telecom segment quite significantly.

The AdvancedTCA Board AT8001 completely corresponds to the ATCA standard. It integrates the high-performance, low-voltage Xeon TM processor with a clock rate of 2.8 GHz and integrated 1 MB L2 cache, and it has an 800 MHz system plus PCI Express (PCIe). The Intel E7520 memory hub controller chipset allows up to 8 GB SDRAM with DDR-II 400. The board is also equipped with backplane connections for Dual Gigabit Ethernet and optional dual fiber channel connections. It is the first processor board on the market to support the AMC specification and offers space for two AMC modules on a single processor board. By using various AMC modules (pure I/O or processor AMC), the board can be adapted for a wide variety of application requirements. There are connectivity options for PCIe, Gigabit Ethernet and Serial ATA. The AT8001 complies with the IPMI 1.5 standard, and includes an IPMC for management and implementation of diagnostic functions.

Included in the compatible processor module AM4001, the first Advanced Mezzanine Card from Kontron, is an Intel Pentium M 760 processor with 2.0 GHz and a high-performance Intel E7320 chipset. It has up to 4 GB DDR-II memory (PC400) and supports AMC.1 (PCIe), AMC.2 (Gigabit Ethernet) and AMC.3 (Serial ATA) standards. AM4001 is available as a single-width module with various processor options, as a half-height or full-height version. Depending on the AMC module, the board's I/O functionality or processor performance can be individually adjusted, thereby significantly increasing flexibility and scalability. The AM4001 is the ideal complementary product for the AT8001 to extend the processor performance on demand.

According to the "Best of Breed" style, Kontron's ATCA and AMC solutions support carrier-grade software such as MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition.

ATCA and AMC: Two standards setting new benchmarks
According to relevant prognoses, in the future many large producers of telecom systems will adapt their previously internally developed backbone systems to the ATCA (Advance Telecom Computing Architecture, PICMG 3.x ) standard. As a frontline pioneer, Kontron has recognized the need for and the trend towards standardization in this segment and has played a decisive role in defining the ATCA standard. As one of the first companies, Kontron already presented a complete product family for this new specification at the end of last year.

At the same time, Kontron is deliberately pursuing an `AMC everywhere' approach, which is based crutially on the flexible use of AMCs outside of telecommunications. In the course of the ATCA specification defined by the PICMG panel, AMC (Advanced Mezzanine Card, PICMG AMX.x) is the most important aspect of ATCA. As a pioneer, Kontron has recognized the importance of the new mezzanine concept, also beyond ATCA applications, and has created its own `AMC everywhere' branding.
