Aquatech to Provide Egypt's First Integrated Zero Liquid Discharge Plant with ETHYDCO Contract
Contract Signing Celebrated at Event Focusing on "Working Together to Protect the Environment of Egypt"
CAIRO - Aquatech, a global leader in water purification technology for industrial and infrastructure markets, has been awarded a contract by the Egyptian Ethylene and Derivatives Company (ETHYDCO) to provide a water treatment facility that includes the first integrated Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) plant in Egypt.
The awarding of this contract was commemorated at a signing ceremony in Cairo on Monday, 25 March presided over by ETHYDCO Chairman & CEO Eng. Mohamed Samy Abdel Hady, Dr. Karl Michael Millauer, Senior Vice President of Aquatech, and Eng. Abdel Nasser Salah, Chairman & CEO of Enppi (Engineering for the Petroleum and Process Industries).
The honorable Minister of Petroleum & Mineral Resources, honorable Minister of State for Environmental Affairs, honorable Minister of General Utilities and honorable Minister of Industry and Foreign Trade were invited to join more than 100 guests from industry and officials from ETHYDCO, Aquatech and Enppi at the event, which celebrated the theme, "Working Together to Protect the Environment of Egypt". Also participating was Ann Bacher, Regional Commercial Counselor of the Embassy of the United States of America.
Speaking on the ETHYDCO project, Dr. Millauer said, "This is a bold initiative undertaken by ETHYDCO, which will be the pioneer in installing a ZLD plant. The feed water to the plant will be a composite mix of treated effluent and water from Nile River canal, having inconsistent water chemistry throughout the year. After a lot of due diligence done by ETHYDCO and its consultant Enppi, Aquatech's proposed schematic was selected because it can optimally treat this type of feed water.
"With this plant in place, ETHYDCO shall meet all the requisite norms of ZLD established by the Egyptian government to protect their only life-giving aquifer, The River Nile. The success of this project is keenly viewed by the Egyptian government and the industry in this region. Once successful, it shall become a beacon for other industries not only in Egypt, but also GCC countries, to follow."
The ZLD plant will be installed at ETHYDCO's petroleum derivatives manufacturing site in Alexandria. A subsidiary of Egyptian Holding Co. for Petrochemical (ECHEM), ETHYDCO produces ethylene and other petroleum derivatives at this site. The plant designed and installed by Aquatech will treat wastewater from this facility and cooling tower blowdown to get cooling tower makeup water, boiler feed water and achieve ZLD. The project is expected to be completed in 13 months.
The project management service for this project is being provided by Enppi on behalf of its client, ETHYDCO. Enppi provides fully integrated engineering, procurement, construction supervision, and project management services for the petroleum, petrochemicals, power, and other related industries in Egypt, the MENA region and worldwide.
The technology provided by Aquatech is a microfiltration system, a High Efficiency Reverse Osmosis (HERO™) system, followed by Fractional Electrodeionization (FEDI™) and brine concentrator, and finally a crystallizer and sludge treatment system.
Aquatech has executed several projects in Egypt, notably a Multiple Effect Distillation (MED) seawater desalination system for the Abu Qir Thermal Power Plant for West Delta Electricity Production Company, and a recycle / reuse plant for TCI Sanmar, where it supplied a HERO system.
The Egyptian Ethylene and Derivatives Company (ETHYDCO) is an Egyptian joint venture company has been established with the purpose to produce Ethylene, Butadiene & their derivatives (Polyethylene, Poly-Butadiene). The company started to build a 460,000 T/Y ethylene plant and a 20,000 T/Y butadiene extraction plant as part of ETHYDCO's petrochemical complex in Alexandria, and the plant is scheduled for start-up in early 2015.
