Oracle9i Application Server to Deliver Enterprise-Class J2EE for Windows 2003

Built-in Interoperability Bridges J2EE and .NET and Helps Maximize Development and Deployment Options

REDWOOD SHORES. Calif., Apr. 24, 2003 -
(http://www.oracle.com/tellmemore/?1716295) Oracle Corp. (NASDAQ:ORCL) today announced the upcoming availability of Oracle9i Aplication Server optimized for Windows 2003. Developer Preview versions of Oracle9iAS Containers for J2EE (OC4J) for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Server 2003 are immediately available for free download from Oracle's developer community Website, Oracle Technology Network (OTN). Full production versions of Oracle9i Application Server for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Server 2003 will ship with upcoming releases of the product. According to Gartner, more than 75 percent of Fortune 2000 enterprises will use both Microsoft and Java technologies in their IT systems. Gartner's vice president of research, Yefim Natis, asserts that for most enterprises, the real question will remain how to integrate the two models most effectively, rather than choosing one over the other. With Oracle, customers can enjoy the portability, enterprise-class application development, and integration capabilities of the standards-based Oracle Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) platform while making the most of their Windows and .Net investments.

Featuring strong .NET interoperability and Windows platform support, Oracle9i Application Server offers customers a cost-effective way to combine J2EE and .NET in their IT infrastructure. Organizations can develop J2EE-based Web Services on Oracle's Unbreakable platform and invoke them from .NET Web Services clients, and Oracle developers can invoke .NET Web services from their J2EE applications. In addition to being a co-founder of the Web Services Interoperability Organization (WS-1) and ensuring that Oracle9i Application Server conforms to WS-1 standard profiles, Oracle has taken additional steps by making an advanced tool available to help developers verify the interoperability of their J2EE and .NET applications.

"Oracle9i Application Server is the most advanced application server available for developing and deploying J2EE applications that interoperate with Windows," said Thomas Kurian, senior vice president of Oracle9i Application Server development. "Offering a complete, integrated and secure solution for any enterprise-level Web services development project, Oracle9i Application Server gives customers a true choice - they can easily integrate Web services built on any Java platform, as well as the .NET platform."

Oracle9i Application Server is Optimized for the Windows Platform The current release of Oracle9i Application Server available today has been optimized or tightly integrated with the Windows Server platform in the following areas:

o Integrated Web Applications - Oracle9i Application Server includes direct integration with Microsoft IIS through the Microsoft ISAPI application programming interfaces. With Oracle9i Application Server, organizations can deploy Web sites that run applications built with J2EE, Perl, Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP) and .Net on Windows 2003.
o Bridging J2EE and .NET with Web Services - Oracle9i Application Server is compliant with the WS-I standard profiles and includes advanced facilities for verifying that Web services built on the Oracle J2EE platform are interoperable with Microsoft Net Web services.
o Ensuring High Availability - Tight integration with Microsoft Cluster Services and Microsoft Network Load Balancer ensures fault tolerance and high availability for applications deployed on Oracle9i Application Server for Windows.
o Managing User Authentication Across J2EE and Windows - Oracle9i Application Server offers bi-directional integration between Oracle Internet Directory and Microsoft Active Directory to synchronize user authentication and authorization.
o Consolidate Applications in an Enterprise Portal - Oracle9i Application Server enables organizations to integrate Microsoft Exchange and custom applications developed with Microsoft ASP and .NET tools with other business applications, using the open portlet architecture of Oracle9iAS Portal.
