VERITAS Helps to Ensure Business Continuity With New Application Performance Management Software

VERITAS Application Saver software helps to improve server utilization and prevent common software faults from causing complete application failures

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - March 9, 2004 - VERITAS Software Corporation (Nasdaq: VRTS), the leading storage software provider, today announced the immediate availability of VERITAS Application Saver(TM) software, a companion product for VERITAS i³(TM) application performance management (APM) software that helps to ensure business continuity by improving server utilization and preventing common software faults from becoming failures in large, distributed software applications.

Undiscovered memory leaks, buffer overwrites and thread management issues are the types of problems that can cause intermittent faults and failures that may take days or even weeks before they are recognized as problems within the thousands to millions of lines of code that now characterize large corporate applications. Left uncorrected, these common problems can affect the scalability of an application, leading to the installation of additional servers to meet end-user capacity requirements.

To ensure business continuity and minimize the need for extra servers, VERITAS Application Saver software monitors applications in real-time and provides on-the-fly fixes to these common software errors. In addition, the new software helps troubleshooting by capturing detailed, line-by-line "forensic" snapshots that reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the application fault or failure.

"It's difficult to address business users' concerns about application performance and reliability without supporting data," said Bob Maness, senior director of product marketing, VERITAS Software. "VERITAS Application Saver software provides this data and allows IT staff to focus on delivering new services, rather than sustaining applications with scalability bottlenecks and intermittent errors."

When used in combination with the VERITAS i³ application performance management software suite, VERITAS Application Saver software adds application reliability management to provide a comprehensive and heterogeneous solution for managing enterprise applications.

Application Performance Management and Utility Computing
Utility computing is a computing model that delivers IT as a measurable service, aligned with business needs and capable of adapting to changing demands. Application performance is one of the key building blocks of VERITAS' utility computing strategy, since the utter reliance businesses have on their information systems means that these businesses can come to a halt when their IT systems are unavailable. Poorly performing systems also will result in poorly performing organizations and poor customer perception of these organizations. Businesses that understand these issues have moved beyond traditional availability initiatives, usually focusing on uptime only, and are implementing programs with a broader view of availability that address both system uptime and user response time.
