Proofpoint Deploys Advanced, Machine Learning Technology to Stop Spam in Japanese and Other Asian Languages

Enhancements to Proofpoint MLX Anti-Spam Technology Deliver More Than 98% Effectiveness Against Japanese Language Spam

CUPERTINO, Calif., Feb. 27 / -- Proofpoint, Inc., the leader in large-enterprise messaging security solutions, today announced the availability of a new version of its machine learning-based anti-spam technology that offers enhanced protection against spam in double-byte languages including Japanese and Chinese. Now with full support for double-byte languages, the Proofpoint Spam Detection(TM) module -- powered by Proofpoint MLX(TM) machine learning technology -- offers higher than 98% effectiveness against Japanese language spam. Proofpoint technology partner Nomura Research Institute, Ltd. (NRI), one of Japan's leading providers of consulting and system integration services, continues to provide linguistic expertise and training guidance to ensure Proofpoint's optimal performance against Asian language spam.

"One of the unique advantages of Proofpoint MLX machine learning technology is that it can easily be trained to identify and stop new messaging threats, such as spam in specific foreign languages," said Sandra Vaughan, senior vice president of products for Proofpoint, Inc. "Proofpoint has been able to rapidly increase our solution's effectiveness against Japanese spam, with minimal effort."

Proofpoint MLX provides outstanding accuracy against all types of spam by examining more than 200,000 structural and content attributes. Traditional anti-spam solutions evaluate only a limited number of attributes and are unable to decisively classify spam, leading to low effectiveness and a high number of misclassified messages ("false positives"). The advanced methods used in Proofpoint MLX are superior to simple statistical techniques such as Bayesian filtering and signature- or fingerprint-based techniques, which are easily fooled by spammers.

"Enterprises in Japan and around the globe have seen a rapid increase in Asian language and other double-byte forms of spam, which have proven extremely difficult for traditional solutions to stop," said Koji Yagi, IT infrastructure solution division general manager for Nomura Research Institute. "The new enhancements to Proofpoint MLX represent a true breakthrough in both effectiveness and accuracy against this extremely challenging form of unsolicited email."

Proofpoint's enhanced anti-spam engine is available as part of the newly introduced Proofpoint 4 family of messaging security solutions (see related release, "Proofpoint Version 4 Delivers Next-generation Messaging Security to Protect Enterprises from Spam and Viruses, Ensure Privacy of Customer and Employee Data and Guard Against Intellectual Property Leaks"). Current customers of the Proofpoint Protection Server software and Proofpoint Messaging Security Gateway appliance (versions 2.5 and higher) will automatically benefit from the enhanced protection against Asian language spam through regular spam engine updates provided through the Proofpoint Dynamic Update Service(TM).
