RESM Angle Encoder Kicks Off the New Signum(TM) Range from Renishaw - Intelligent Encoders for Optimum Performance



Solution to demanding applications, steel ring encoders feature higher speed and operating temperature, ultra-low cyclic error, and IN-TRAC(TM) bi-directional optical reference mark

September 2004 - Renishaw's new Signum(TM) encoder range offers high speed, reliable, non-contact performance combined with advanced features including IN-TRAC(TM) auto-phase bi-directional optical reference mark. The first offering from this range is the RESM optical angle encoder, which comprises the RESM ring, SR readhead and Si interface. The robust piece stainless steel ring, with integral 20 mm scale marked directly on the periphery, stands up to demanding industrial applications. It features IN-TRAC(TM) optical reference mark embedded in the scale track, which is repeatable in both directions at operational speeds over 3,600 rev/min (Ø52 mm) and up to 85°C.

Low-mass, low-inertia design (10 mm x 10 mm ring cross section) enables high dynamic performance without compromising system performance. Accuracy to ± 0.5 arc second and resolution and repeatability to 0.02 arc second satisfy the most demanding precision applications. The low profile ring is available in a wide range of sizes (Ø52 mm to Ø413 mm) and line counts, all of which feature a large internal diameter for flexible integration. In addition, Renishaw's patented taper mount enables easy installation and provides error compensation for mounting shaft eccentricity.

The high-reliability designs complement the robust stainless steel rings with unique filtering optics, standard on all Renishaw encoders, which provide excellent immunity to dirt, dust and scratches. In addition, the RESM encoder uses Signum(TM) intelligent signal processing to ensure excellent reliability and ultra-low cyclic error (± 40 nm), while comprehensive Signum(TM) software enables optimum set-up and real-time system diagnostics via a PC's USB port.

RESM ring encoders are particularly suited to direct drive rotary motors and their large diameter, frameless format. The RESM ring locks directly to the machine shaft, eliminating coupling losses, oscillation, shaft torsion and other hysteresis errors that can occur with sealed encoders. Direct mounting provides a perfectly matched rotary motion system, eliminating position error, backlash, and audible noise, while saving on space and mechanical complexity.

Ideal for precision rotary axes on machine tools and other demanding industrial applications requiring reliable, angular position feedback, the low-profile RESM offers exceptional accuracy and versatility in a compact and easy-to-install format. The large internal diameter simplifies the routing of cables and other supplies through the machine, while direct taper-mounting to the machine shaft ensures a compact drive configuration. The Si interfaces can be mounted remotely and a small rugged connector on the readhead cable allows easy feed-through where access is restricted.
