Analysis System provides continuous chlorine measurement.

Press Release Summary:

Comprised of sample conditioning system, analyzer, and sensor, Model TCL measures total chlorine in water, including seawater. It requires only distilled white vinegar and potassium iodide as reagents, which only need to be replaced every 2 months. System uses either Model 1055 Solu Comp II analyzer or Model 54eA analyzer, both of which are housed in NEMA 4X enclosures and provide programmable process alarms. Model 54eA includes HART digital communications.

Emerson Introduces Next-Generation Total Chlorine Analysis System That Dramatically Improves Reagent Maintenance

New Rosemount Analytical Model TCL System Significantly Reduces Total Cost of Ownership While Delivering Continuous Chlorine Measurement

IRVINE, Calif. (October 31, 2005) - Emerson Process Management introduces the Rosemount Analytical Model TCL, a complete system for the measurement of total chlorine in water, including seawater. The new Model TCL, comprised of a sample conditioning system, an analyzer and a sensor, significantly reduces cost of ownership over previous generation total chlorine systems by employing readily available, low-cost reagents, and reducing the frequency of reagent replacement by as much as eight times.

"The Model TCL is the next generation of total chlorine measurement for water plants and industrial applications," commented John Wright, vice president of marketing, Rosemount Analytical, Liquid Division of Emerson Process Management. "The Model TCL uses a proven analysis methodology and was designed to minimize maintenance requirements and operating costs. At the same time, the Model TCL provides a continuous measurement as opposed to a periodic sample measurement. Continuous analysis is required for systems where control will be used."

The sample conditioning system of the Model TCL continuously injects a solution of acetic acid (vinegar) and potassium iodide into the sample. The acid lowers the pH to between 3.5 and 4.5, and allows total chlorine in the sample to quantitatively react with the potassium iodide to produce iodine. The sensor measures the iodine concentration, and the analyzer displays the total oxidant concentration in ppm as CL2. Because the system requires only distilled white vinegar and potassium iodide as reagents, customers can easily acquire their own reagents from any source (they are also available from Emerson), significantly reducing reagent costs over other total chlorine systems. In addition, the reagent only needs to be replaced once every two months. Previous generation systems have required reagent replacement as often as once a week, with best-case scenarios at about once per month.

The Model TCL uses either a Model 1055 Solu Comp II chlorine analyzer or a Model 54eA analyzer. Both analyzers are easy to use, provide programmable process alarms, and are housed in rugged NEMA 4X enclosures. The Model 54eA has HART digital communications. The TCL uses the Emerson Model 499ACL-02 amperometric sensor. The sensor is easy to maintain, requiring only a few minutes a month.

The Model TCL Total Chlorine Analysis System is part of Emerson's broad line of Rosemount Analytical instrumentation that powers Emerson's PlantWeb(R) digital plant architecture to help municipalities navigate today's complex water environment. PlantWeb delivers improved plant performance and reduced operating costs by networking the company's broad line of intelligent measurement and analysis devices with Emerson's Ovation(R) expert control system and AMS(TM) Suite of predictive maintenance software applications.
