New Aluminum Shearbolt Connectors for Underground Splicing
HARRISBURG, Pa - Jan. 27, 2006 - Tyco Electronics has introduced a new line of aluminum ShearBolt range-taking mechanical connectors. With this new line, three connector sizes accommodate both aluminum and copper conductors from 2 AWG compact stranded up to 1000kcmil standard stranded class B. The primary application for ShearBolt connectors is underground splicing of voltages up to 35kV.
By using specially designed shear head bolts to connect the splice to the power cable, the ShearBolt connectors control the torque applied and help ensure that proper torquing results. Further, after the bolt shears, a minimal edge remains at the shear point. Additionally, power line installers will experience a less strenuous connection operation in comparison to manual compression type connections. Standard ratchet wrenches and hexagonal sockets are used along with a connector holding tool to make the connection.
Manufactured from seamless, high-conductivity aluminum, ShearBolt connectors are suitable for heavy-duty utility applications. The inside surface of ShearBolt connectors incorporate a grooved surface to enhance electrical conductivity and a solid center stop helps installers properly position the conductor in the connector, helps minimize oil leakage on applications connecting paper-insulated power cables and forces the oxide-inhibiting compound into the conductor strands. A chamfered cable entry eases cable insertion and tapered connector ends help reduce electrical stress at higher voltages.
Three sizes are available: 2 AWG - 350 kcmil, 350 kcmil - 750 kcmil, and 600 kcmil to 1,000 kcmil.
