Customized FlowCAM Speeds Sample Processing, Permits Faster Remedial Action

Yarmouth, ME: The new algae monitoring FlowCAM® from Fluid Imaging Technologies, Yarmouth, Maine (www.fluidimaging.com) features a customized series of specifications that enable water quality engineers to automatically detect, image and identify algal cells in real time in seconds. To be unveiled at the American Water Works Association (AWWA) ACE 2007 booth #425 on June 24th in Toronto, Ont., the portable algae monitoring FlowCAM is setup with a 30mW 473 nm blue solid-state laser, digital firewire progressive scan CCD color camera and proprietary software that permit sample processing by both fluorescence and light scatter simultaneously to ensure that every algal cell and particle are detected, imaged in hi-res in full color, identified, counted and measured while discriminating algal from non-algal particles, even in highly diluted samples.

Featuring patented technology advancing flow cytometry and microscopy, the automated algae monitoring FlowCAM accelerates sample processing from up to 30 days for off-site, manual processing using traditional microscopy to a few minutes while providing more accurate and actionable data, reducing reliance on personnel and virtually eliminating the potential for human error. With faster detection and more accurate, confident assessment of a growing presence of harmful algae, remedial action may be performed before the algae bloom becomes problematic in the distribution system and before customers are affected. The algae monitoring FlowCAM includes four levels of magnification for analyzing cells and particles from 3 um to 3 mm such as blue green algae and zooplankton, respectively. The FlowCAM comes pre-loaded with VisualSpreadsheet©, the company's proprietary software for manipulating, comparing and analyzing the acquired images and data in an easy-to-use, Excel based platform.
