Thales Computers Introduces New ATR Airborne Enclosure for Harsh Environment Applications

Raleigh, NC, September 2002 - Thales Computers, a leader in providing PowerPC and Pentium-based VME computing solutions to OEMs and system integrators, has introduced the 3/4ATR-WA-M28 Airborne Rack, an off-the-shelf enclosure ideal for airborne, ship and ground mobile systems, as well as other harsh environment applications.

The new 3/4ATR-WA-M28 accommodates 6U VME64x boards, as well as any IEEE1101-compliant convection-cooled board that employs a backplane with P0 connectors. The new enclosure has been optimized for use with Thales Computers' IEEE1101.10-compliant 6U Extended Temperature (WA) and Convection-Cooled Ruggedizer(TM)(RA) boards, which feature front panel connectors and ejector handles.

The new convection-cooled enclosure meets RTCADO160D and MIL-STD-810 requirements for harsh environment and airborne use, and is qualified for operating temperatures of -45°C to +75°C (-49°F to 167°F). The 3/4ATR-WA-M28 employs conductive interior surfaces using flat gasketing methods to reduce EMC/EMI in accordance with MIL-STD-461.

The 3/4ATR-WA-M28 features a 28 VDC power supply, a 300-watt input and four outputs (5 V, 3.3 V, +/- 12 V). The new enclosure provides two I/O connectors and a power connector; all are compliant with MIL-C-38999. Adequate space is provided between the top cover and front panel for I/O wiring from the front panel connectors to the P2/PO backplane connectors and/or front panels of installed boards.

The new enclosure is cooled by a single fan that distributes a turbulent airflow to all installed boards; the filter unit is accessible via the front panel. The 3/4ATR-WA-M28 conforms to the standard ARINC404 size profile for tall boxes; the front panel connector area has been maximized by positioning ARINC600 hold-downs to ARINC404.

Pricing for the new 3/4ATR-WA-M28 starts at $25,520 ( Euros25,910). Delivery is 10 to 12 weeks ARO.
