E-T-A's Aerospace Circuit Breaker Cuts Weight 10 Percent Without Adding Cost
Chicago, January 26, 2004 - E-T-A Circuit Breakers announced the 5140, a high-performance circuit breaker that is temperature compensated and saves both weight and space without adding cost.
The new circuit breaker answers the trend toward higher current capacity in less space and less weight. Even with optional auxiliary contacts, the 3-pole breaker weighs only 150 grams - up to 10 percent less than competing devices. Considering that hundreds of this circuit breaker may be used in a single commercial airliner, the cumulative weight reduction is a significant benefit to aircraft designers.
The 5140 thermal circuit breaker was designed for 400 Hz, 3-pole applications from 20 to 50 amps. Above 35 amps, no comparable breaker is smaller than the 5140- an exceptionally high rating for a circuit breaker in a compact form factor. This is accomplished by a design that allows for heat dissipation and careful selection of materials used in the bimetal and contacts.
Used in commercial and military aircraft applications, the 5140 makes an excellent candidate for military use under the COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) program. In addition to aircraft applications, the 5140 circuit breaker is suitable for use in rugged ground vehicles and boats where high-performance circuit protection is required.
The circuit breaker is temperature-compensated, providing consistent trip curve characteristics from -55 to +90 degrees C. Typical life is 5000 mechanical cycles and 2500 inductive cycles, assuring long, reliable service.
Options include auxiliary contacts, thread neck size selection and terminal hardware. Accessories include an actuator extension, identification collars and lock out rings. A single-pole version is available.
The 5140 circuit breaker is the newest member of E-T-A's broad family of high-performance circuit breakers. Lower current ratings are available through the 583 Series circuit breaker.
