Baldor Announces New Optigen(TM) Adjustable Speed Generator

Baldor Electric Company, Fort Smith, Arkansas based manufacturer of energy saving industrial electric motors, drives and generators, announces an industry first, the OptiGen(TM) adjustable speed generator.

The new Baldor generator, OptiGen(TM), automatically adjusts the generated power output to match various load requirements. The heart of the new Baldor OptiGen(TM) is our exclusive power electronics and engine control that automatically adjusts the engine speed up or down while monitoring the electrical power being consumed. The onboard power electronics maintains constant voltage and frequency output during all load conditions.

OptiGen(TM) generators from Baldor are designed for applications where standby power generation is required. Installation is just like a conventional fixed speed generator. No additional wiring, pad space or electrical enclosures are necessary. OptiGen(TM) automatically adjusts engine speed to meet specific load requirements without compromising the desired fixed frequency and voltage output. Conventional generators are required to turn at a specific RPM to produce the required frequency. This is where the OptiGen(TM) power electronics takes over. If the load requirement is less than the rated output of the generator, OptiGen(TM) automatically adjusts the engine RPM lower while still maintaining the desired output frequency.

Baldor's OptiGen(TM) adjustable speed generator is designed to provide up to 250% rated power for electric motor starting. Typically, non-resistive loads such as motors, take up to 5 times (or more) the power to start as they do to run. After starting, the conventional generator power output is typically limited to half its continuous rating while the engine continues to run at full speed. A fixed generator would have to be doubled in size to provide the necessary power to start non-resistive loads. With the OptiGen(TM), the size is more closely matched to the continuous load requirements.

While meeting the same load requirements as upsized fixed speed generators, the Baldor OptiGen(TM) provides:

o Reduced noise levels
o Efficient fuel usage
o Longer engine life
o Lower emissions
o Smaller installation footprint
o Improved power quality
o Lower initial and operation costs

A feature of the Baldor OptiGen(TM) is its ability to add a UPS module when power transfer time is critical. The optional module provides true UPS capabilities without the high cost associated with a conventional battery supplied UPS system. OptiGen(TM) modules provide UPS power at a fraction of the cost of traditional UPS systems. It provides clean backup power with a minimum number of batteries and associated wiring.

Baldor generators are available from 36 Baldor sales offices and warehouses across North America.
