2.2Gsps, 8-Bit ADC Samples Input Frequencies beyond 2GHz

The MAX109 is an 8-bit, 2.2Gsps ADC with a track/hold amplifier, a quantizer, and 1:4 demultiplexed LVDS outputs.

This ADC allows designers to digitize input frequencies beyond 2GHz. This reduces or eliminates the need for RF downconverters.

An advanced proprietary SiGe process and a high-performance architecture enable this excellent wideband dynamic performance.

The MAX109 is ideal for applications such as broadband communication receivers, radar systems, and high-end instrumentation systems.

SUNNYVALE, CA - July 18, 2007 - Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX109, the industry's highest performance, 8-bit, 2.2Gsps analog-to-digital converter (ADC). This device offers excellent wideband dynamic performance that has been optimized for capturing input frequencies in the second Nyquist zone. Fabricated using an advanced SiGe process, the MAX109 integrates a high-performance track/hold (T/H) amplifier, a quantizer, and a 1:4 demultiplexer on a single monolithic die.

At a sample rate of 2.2Gsps and an input frequency of 300MHz, the ADC achieves a spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of 62dBc and a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 45dB. The SNR remains flat (within 1.6dB) for input frequencies all the way up to 2GHz. The MAX109 can also digitize/synthesize signals directly at RF, thus reducing or eliminating the need for RF downconverters.

This excellent wideband dynamic performance and integrated functionality make the MAX109 ideal for applications such as broadband communication receivers, radar systems, and high-end instrumentation systems.

The ADC supports either differential or single-ended inputs with a ±250mV voltage range. The output data is in standard LVDS format and is demultiplexed internally by a 1:4 demultiplexer. The LVDS outputs operate from a supply-voltage range of 3.0V to 3.6V, which enables compatibility with single 3V-reference systems. Control inputs allow interleaving of additional MAX109 devices to increase the effective system-sampling rate.

The MAX109 is offered in a 256-pin SBGA package and is specified over the extended (-40°C to +85°C) temperature range. Contact the factory for pricing. An evaluation kit will be available for ease of design.
