New Dow Plastics EMERGE ABS 5100 Resin Gets "Smart"

EMERGE ABS 5100 Resin Offers Improved Performance and Aesthetics For Smart Card Applications

MIDLAND, Mich. - Nov. 5, 2002 - Uses for smart cards continue to grow each year, and as their popularity increases, so do the demands on card fabricators. Not only do manufacturers need to produce cards that meet industry reliability and telecom standards, but they must also contain costs to remain viable in this highly competitive arena.

Dow Plastics has developed a new resin product - EMERGE* ABS 5100 advanced resin - to help card fabricators address these specific challenges. Stemming from the EMERGE product line, a family of resins specifically created for information technology equipment (ITE) applications, the new EMERGE ABS 5100 is an ABS material with outstanding processability characteristics for producing complex, thin-walled parts, with minimum plate-out and tool wear. EMERGE ABS 5100 resin also provides the excellent durability and toughness needed to meet Deutsche Telekom standards for card reliability and robustness.

"Card manufacturers are challenged to keep up with the fast-paced market demand, produce reliable smart cards and still reduce their production costs," said Karen Shepard-Jackson, North America sales and marketing manager for Dow Plastics. "Customers using EMERGE ABS 5100 resin have experienced a one-to-two percent increase in productivity, enabling them to lower their total costs and bring their products to market more quickly."

Additionally, the mechanical properties of EMERGE ABS 5100 resin deliver superior aesthetics with a natural-based color that reduces the impurities usually formed at high molding temperatures. The high opacity of EMERGE ABS 5100 resin provides improved laser-marking qualities, making it well suited for graphic-heavy smart card applications such as security access cards and computer/Internet user cards.
