6N Systems Licenses First DataBank's OrderView Med Knowledge Base(TM) for Long Term Care CPOE and eMAR

EMR Will Be Showcased at HIMSS '08 Annual Convention, First DataBank Booth #3747

SAN BRUNO, Calif., Feb. 21 -- First DataBank announced today that 6N Systems, a New York state-based long-term care software provider, has licensed OrderView Med Knowledge Base(TM), a computerized physician order entry (CPOE)-ready drug database designed for medication ordering and prescribing. OrderView will be integrated into the eMAR (electronic medication administration record) piece of the 6N EMR(TM), an electronic medical record for long term care.

6N Systems will leverage OrderView medication content to simplify computerized physician order entry (CPOE) for long-term care organizations, and help to broaden adoption of a technology widely acknowledged to improve patient safety. CPOE systems are in use in many hospitals yet the introduction of these powerful technologies into the long-term care market is relatively new. As long-term care organizations prepare for CPOE they need to consider the importance of choosing drug content that's specifically formulated to streamline clinician workflow -- rather than complicating it -- to encourage physician adoption.

First DataBank has addressed these usability issues by creating a CPOE-ready drug database, the OrderView Med Knowledge Base(TM). With OrderView content, 6N has been able to create a CPOE solution that will enable medication ordering consistency by allowing access to the resident's medication information, thereby making it safer to administer, track and reconcile medications.

"The use of OrderView in our CPOE system is critical in allowing us to meet our aggressive goals for efficiency and quality of care," said Bill Kilburn, Chief Technology Officer for 6N Systems. "Having an extensive knowledge base like this to enhance usability ensures that our customers will be able to see the immediate impact in the reduction of medication ordering errors, while increasing ordering efficiency."

A future release of the OrderView Med Knowledge Base will not only allow clinicians to quickly prescribe medications, but allows orders to be customized based on patient parameters, non-standard dosing, as well as provide renal and hepatic adjustments for patients who have specific kidney or liver issues. This means that medication reconciliation can be accomplished with the whole patient record in mind -- creating safer dosing and reducing the risk of medication interaction errors. 6N Systems has begun incorporating this upcoming OrderView functionality and will be demonstrating their beta application in the First DataBank booth at HIMSS.

"We are extremely pleased to see that 6N Systems chose to incorporate OrderView into their applications for use in a long term care setting," said Don Nielsen, MD, President, First DataBank. "To us, this signifies an increasing realization that clinical software can help support patient safety goals in long term care, a setting that has not had high deployment of such tools historically."

6N Systems' EMR(TM) software is an integral part of a resident's larger health care network and provides clinicians in long term care organizations with the information they need to improve safety, efficiency and quality of care. The 6N EMR(TM) includes a full suite of clinical features including orders, resident charts, and custom assessment and reporting tools, all designed to streamline data management and improve care efficiency. By using 6N's EMR with integrated medication ordering content from OrderView, clinicians can now automatically check patient medical histories, potential drug interactions and allergies, and duplicative or conflicting therapies, before writing a new prescription.
