Whitford XylaMed® Coatings for Guidewires and Other Medical Devices

Whitford, manufacturer of the world’s largest, most complete line of fluoropolymer coatings for industrial and consumer industries, has constructed a Medical Coatings Facility exclusively for the manufacture of high-performance fluoropolymer coatings for medical devices.

The separate facility includes new, dedicated equipment, as well as its own quality-control laboratory with management and operations personnel.

Whitford high-performance coatings have been successfully used on medical devices for many years. The reason for the dedicated facility was the realization of the importance of conforming to ISO 13485 specifictions, which has been completed.

Whitford’s coatings offer a variety of important benefits:

• Ability to customize medical devices previously uncoated

• Lubricity and heat resistance

• Insulation

• Biocompatibility

• Color coding

• Resistance to sterilization

• Validated manufacturing (ISO 13485)

• 50 years coating experience.

From catheter guide wires to scalpel blades and other devices that benefit from a PTFE, FEP or other fluoropolymer coating, customers know Whitford’s coatings are 100% reproducible, and they will receive the same precise formula made the same way every single time.

Whitford’s XylaMed coatings for medical devices fall into five categories:

• Chromic acid catalyzed

• High PTFE

• Aqueous PTFE

• PTFE powder

• FEP/PTFE powder.

These coatings come in different colors for quick and easy identification, including black, grey, green, blue and clear.

They are used on a variety of applications for the many benefits listed on the previous page. Typical applications are:

• Guide wires

• Electrosurgical tools

• Hypotubes

• Mandrels

• Needles

• Cannulae

• Scalpels

• Surgical instruments

Important: Since its beginning, Whitford has said “We’re not in the business of selling coatings. We’re in the business of solving problems for our customers. Coatings and the related technologies are simply the means by which we solve them”.

If your medical device requires a special coating that is not among the many we carry, we’ll work with you to develop one that fits your specifications precisely.
