Virtually a Whole New City Center – Built on PENETRON

EAST SETAUKET, N.Y. (PRWEB) JULY 09, 2018 - The City Springs project, inaugurated July 2018 to great fanfare, created a new “heartbeat” for the town of Sandy Springs – all built on PENETRON-treated concrete foundations.

Development of the City Springs project is nothing less than a wholly new city center for Sandy Springs, a suburban city of just over 100,000 inhabitants and part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The innovative project features a civic center with city offices, the City Springs Performing Arts Center, and retail and residential areas, all arranged around the city green and atop an underground parking facility.

Rosser International Architects designed the civic buildings; Jb+a, Inc. was responsible for the City Green Plaza and other outdoor spaces, and Carter/Selig Enterprises, as the project manager, developed the retail and residential buildings. Holder Construction, the general contractor, oversaw construction of the foundations that made up the concrete structures for the underground parking facility.

PENETRON Waterproofs Below-grade Garage
“The layout is centered on the City Green Plaza, a walkable city center that integrates culture and city administration with mixed-use structures – high-end residential buildings with adjacent retail and entertainment options,” says Christopher Chen, Director of The Penetron Group. “The project’s lead architect at Rosser International tapped Penetron crystalline technology as a waterproofing solution for the underground parking garage that forms the below-grade basement of the arts center and town office building.”

Thomas Concrete, the ready-mix supplier, submitted PENETRON ADMIX for approval. Mixing PENETRON ADMIX – in soluble bags – into the shotcrete helped save time and ensured a precise mix, as the bags dissolved quickly and completely during batching. The convenience and ease of use of an admixture in soluble bags was specified for the project. The PENETRON-enhanced shotcrete was sprayed on the below-grade foundation walls that comprise the expansive City Springs underground parking facility. Over 2,000 cubic yards (1,530 m3) of shotcrete were treated.

Reducing Future Maintenance and Repair Costs
A crystalline admixture, PENETRON ADMIX reduces permeability in concrete by permanently sealing microcracks, pores and capillaries, effectively protecting the concrete against water penetration and the effects of deterioration, even under high hydrostatic pressure. It can significantly increase concrete durability and service life.

“Recent tests have shown that adding PENETRON ADMIX to the concrete can drastically reduce future maintenance and repair costs,” adds Christopher Chen. “A Penetron-treated structure will outlive untreated structures by 60 years or more!”
