UGS Announces Software Support for Technische Universität Darmstadt, Sponsors First PACE International Forum on Digital Manufacturing

Top engineering university's use of UGS software designed to ensure students garner competitive edge for their career
DARMSTADT, Germany and PLANO, Texas - UGS Corp., a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today announced it will provide a suite of PLM software solutions to leading German engineering university Technische Universität Darmstadt (TUD) in order help prepare its students for the next-generation of engineering opportunities by bringing real-world manufacturing initiatives into the classroom.
UGS will provide software solutions including NXTM software, Solid EdgeTM software and Parasolid® software for digital product design and development; TeamcenterTM software for digital lifecycle management; and the JT Software Development Toolkit for building JT-enabled applications. JT is the manufacturing industry's most widely-adopted 3D visualization and collaboration data format.
TUD is an active academic member of UGS' JT Open Program, a global initiative to support the ongoing development, support and proliferation of the JT format. TUD assists in developing solution sets that help individual JT Open members leverage the benefits of open collaboration across the extended enterprise. The JT format makes it possible to view and share product information throughout the product lifecycle.
PACE Forum on Digital Manufacturing
During 2006 UGS and PACE (Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Education) will work with TUD to develop collaborative PLM curricula with other PACE institutions on a global basis. Team-teaching of Global Collaborative Engineering will be based on UGS PLM tools and GM automotive production processes.
UGS, along with GM, EDS and Sun Microsystems, recently sponsored the first PACE International Forum on Digital Manufacturing at TUD. At the forum, industry and academic leaders presented the latest developments in the field of digital manufacturing, including simulation methods and technologies as applied to digital machine tools and virtual products. Speakers stressed the importance of digital manufacturing in the automotive and supplier segments, with an overarching focus on the necessity of integrating infrastructures that enable the seamless information processing and continuous management of product development and production process information. In addition, speakers emphasized insight into both fundamental and application-oriented research and the explanation of new approaches for optimization of production processes based on digital and numerical methods.
