UGS Announces Software Support for Technische Universität Darmstadt, Sponsors First PACE International Forum on Digital Manufacturing

Top engineering university's use of UGS software designed to ensure students garner competitive edge for their career

DARMSTADT, Germany and PLANO, Texas - UGS Corp., a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today announced it will provide a suite of PLM software solutions to leading German engineering university Technische Universität Darmstadt (TUD) in order help prepare its students for the next-generation of engineering opportunities by bringing real-world manufacturing initiatives into the classroom.

UGS will provide software solutions including NXTM software, Solid EdgeTM software and Parasolid® software for digital product design and development; TeamcenterTM software for digital lifecycle management; and the JT Software Development Toolkit for building JT-enabled applications. JT is the manufacturing industry's most widely-adopted 3D visualization and collaboration data format.

TUD is an active academic member of UGS' JT Open Program, a global initiative to support the ongoing development, support and proliferation of the JT format. TUD assists in developing solution sets that help individual JT Open members leverage the benefits of open collaboration across the extended enterprise. The JT format makes it possible to view and share product information throughout the product lifecycle.

PACE Forum on Digital Manufacturing

During 2006 UGS and PACE (Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Education) will work with TUD to develop collaborative PLM curricula with other PACE institutions on a global basis. Team-teaching of Global Collaborative Engineering will be based on UGS PLM tools and GM automotive production processes.
UGS, along with GM, EDS and Sun Microsystems, recently sponsored the first PACE International Forum on Digital Manufacturing at TUD. At the forum, industry and academic leaders presented the latest developments in the field of digital manufacturing, including simulation methods and technologies as applied to digital machine tools and virtual products. Speakers stressed the importance of digital manufacturing in the automotive and supplier segments, with an overarching focus on the necessity of integrating infrastructures that enable the seamless information processing and continuous management of product development and production process information. In addition, speakers emphasized insight into both fundamental and application-oriented research and the explanation of new approaches for optimization of production processes based on digital and numerical methods.

"Increased global collaboration, industry-specific customer demands and rapid technology innovations are prompting major shifts in the way successful manufacturers design, develop, deliver and support quality products in the marketplace," said Dr.-Ing Reiner Anderl, vice president, for Technische Universität, Darmstadt. "The PACE International Forum on Digital Manufacturing addressed global opportunities for PLM, implications for manufacturing and empowerment tools for 21st Century engineers."
"We are proud to partner with TUD, the first PACE institution in Europe, and number one engineering school in Germany," said Al Hufstetler, vice president, Tecnomatix Marketing for UGS. "Together with our PACE partners GM, EDS and Sun Microsystems, we are advancing the education of promising young engineers around the world and transforming the process of innovation in academia, as well as the corporate sector. Our PLM tools provide for a development environment that is completely digital with faster processes and comprehensive management and collaboration."

About Technische Universität Darmstadt

TUD is one of the leading European Research Universities with a main emphasis in engineering sciences. Located in the "city of science" Darmstadt (Germany), TUD contributes to strengthening the economical profile of the southern Rhein-Main area. TUD is the first autonomous university in Germany, and about 18,000 students are studying at TUD, where 275 professors and 800 scientists are involved in undergraduate, graduate and PhD programs. The university's profile covers 15 percent social sciences, 35 percent natural sciences and 50 percent engineering sciences. Each year research contracts of about 65 M Euros are gained covering basic research, application-oriented research and industrial research. A main strategy of TUD is to offer research-oriented education integrating students in research projects going beyond the state of the art. In February 2003, TUD was been selected as the first European academic partner in PACE
About PACE

PACE links GM, EDS, Sun Microsystems and UGS to support strategically selected academic institutions worldwide, to develop the automotive product lifecycle management (PLM) team of the future. PLM, as it relates to PACE, is an integrated, parametrics-based approach to all aspects of a product's life - from its design inception, through its manufacture, marketing, distribution and maintenance, and finally into recycling, disposal and re-use/sustainability. PACE seeks to integrate parametrics-based applications into the design, engineering and manufacturing curricula of some of the most prestigious institutions around the world. To date, PACE has made contributions totaling more than US$3.8 billion to 34 institutions in the US, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Mexico, South Korea and Sweden.
