PLYMOUTH, Mich., April 6, 2006 -- The TRUMPF Laser Technology Center presented Frank DiPietro with the first Laser Champion Award for his lifetime achievements in advancing the use of laser technology in industrial manufacturing.

For more than 45 years, DiPietro was actively involved in automated systems, tooling, robotics and laser systems for the General Motors Corporation's automotive operations. In 1992, he founded the Automotive Laser Application Workshop (ALAW) with the support of the University of Michigan. ALAW is now in its 14th consecutive year, and
DiPietro continues as its chairman.

"We wanted to start a new tradition of recognizing people who champion the use of laser technology at their companies. Frank DiPietro has been an inspiration to many people who incorporate new technologies to improve their products and manufacturing processes," said Walter Haimerl, managing director of the TRUMPF Laser Technology Center.

"There are so many applications for lasers to improve the design and manufacture of not only cars, but also medical devices, aircraft, and electronics-the possibilities are endless."

The TRUMPF Laser Technology Center hosted the award presentation during an open house, held in conjunction with ALAW. Richard Chow-Wah, vice president of powertrain manufacturing at DaimlerChrysler presented the award. More than 150 people attended the event, which included live machine demonstrations and featured the North American
premiere of TRUMPF's new TLC 1000 Powertrain system.
