Ticona to Join SAE International 'Composites: are They Ready for Prime Time?' Webcast

Duane Emerson, senior development engineer, Automotive OEM Marketing Group – Ticona, the engineering polymers business of Celanese Corporation, will participate Thursday, March 7, in a technical editorial webcast from the editors at SAE International. The webcast will explore ways in which automakers are unleashing a new wave of lightweight, structurally robust composite materials that they believe will help meet new, ultra-stringent U.S. and European fuel-efficiency regulations.

Emerson will discuss innovations in thermoplastic composite materials technology that are helping design engineers take pounds out of components throughout various new cars and trucks. He will be joined in the panel discussion by Christopher Basela, General Motors Senior Engineer and Body Structures Composites Lead Engineer Corvette, and David J. Mason, Vice President, Global Automotive, Altair. The free 60-minute webcast, which starts at noon EST Thursday, March 7, is titled “Composites: Are They Ready for Prime Time?” and is hosted by SAE International’s Automotive Engineering International magazine. Registration information is available at the SAE AEI website.

In this webcast, which includes a Q&A segment with the experts, participants will get a look at:

  • The Corvette C7’s carbon-fiber-intensive body structure, and its use of carbon and nano technology

  • New developments in thermoplastic composite materials technology for vehicle interior and exterior applications

  • How modeling and FE analysis tools can help engineers optimize their structural composite designs

Emerson received a 2012 Best Paper Award for “Using Unidirectional Glass Tapes to Improve Impact Performance of Thermoplastic Composites in Automotive Applications” at the SPE® Automotive Composites Conference & Exhibition (ACCE) in September. The paper describes a study conducted by Ticona that looked at methods to increase stiffness/strength and impact resistance of an automotive underbody shield (UBS) by using continuous strand, unidirectional (UD) glass-reinforced thermoplastic composite tapes to produce woven fabrics as well as tailored blank laminates.

Ticona offers various thermoplastic solutions for composites used in light and tough components, including:
