Thomson Scientific Announces Strategic Partnership with Chinese Academy of Sciences to Host Chinese Science Citation Database

First Non-English Content Offering Will Be Fully Searchable Within ISI Web of Knowledge Alongside the Science Citation Index Expanded(TM)

PHILADELPHIA and LONDON, Dec. 4 / -- Thomson Scientific, part of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC) and leading provider of information solutions to the worldwide research and business communities, today announced that it is partnering with the Chinese Academy of Sciences to host the Chinese Science Citation Database on the ISI Web of Knowledge(SM) platform. The Chinese Science Citation Database (CSCD) is comprised of the top scholarly publications from the People's Republic of China.

Bringing new depth to the ISI Web of Knowledge's already extensive records, the Chinese Science Citation Database will comprise more than 1,000 scholarly publications with more than 1.3 million records in all, and will be fully searchable within ISI Web of Knowledge. Users will also be able to link from citations within the Chinese Science Citation Database to data within the popular Web of Science®.

Available in early 2008, the Chinese Science Citation Database will be the first non-English product available within ISI Web of Knowledge. Because much of the bibliographic information will appear in both Chinese (Simplified) and English, ISI Web of Knowledge will be upgraded to support Unicode - expanding research capabilities and empowering users with new customization options. Users can conduct searches in a preferred language.

"We are committed to the ongoing enrichment of our citation-index content, and the Chinese Science Citation Database will bring tremendous value to the ISI Web of Knowledge," said Keith MacGregor, executive vice president of Thomson Scientific's Academic & Government strategic business unit. "By integrating and raising the visibility of important, influential research from the People's Republic of China, the new database will build a bridge between Chinese science and the global research community."

"Thomson Scientific is one of the world's leaders in scientific research and information, so naturally we were very excited about the opportunity to further develop and promote the Chinese Science Citation Database," said Dr. Xiaolin Zhang ,Executive Director, National Science Library of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. "Giving Chinese research increased prominence within the ISI Web of Knowledge ensures that the contributions of our scientists will continue to be an important part of the global scientific discourse."

Scientific Output in China is Growing

Based on research conducted using Web of Science, China published 69,664 papers (including document types: articles, notes, reviews, and proceedings papers) in 2006. China's scientific output ranked fifth in the world, after USA, UK, Germany and Japan; accounting for over 7.75% of the World's output. In comparing to China's performance in 2005 (59,611 papers, accounting for more than 6.57% of world's output), it increased about 16.9%; bearing in mind that comparing to the world output 907,551 papers in 2005, the world's output in 2006 (899,074 papers) actually decreased by 8,477 papers. In addition, the citation impact of Chinese papers in the recent five years also increased.

Chinese Science Citation Database (CSCD) was developed with the assistance of National Natural Science Foundation of China in 1989. It is the first citation database in China.

CSCD includes more than 1,000 Chinese and English version core journals published in China, covering Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy, Geosciences, Biology, Agriculture and Forestry, Medicine and Health, Engineering, Environmental Science, and Management Science. It provides over 2 million article records and their more than 13 million citations. The annual updates of CSCD are more than 200,000 source records and about 2.2 million citations. CSCD helps Chinese researchers to search information across disciplines, to track research trends, and to provide research evaluation services.
