Tempe Announces Availability of the Nation's Largest Deployed City-Wide Wi-Fi Network Using Strix Systems' Wireless Mesh

Senator John McCain to Speak at the Event, Which Will Feature Demonstrations of Voice, Video, and Data over Strix Systems' Wireless Mesh Network

CALABASAS, Calif., Nov. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Strix Systems, the leader in high-performance wireless mesh networking, today announced that its Access/One Network Outdoor Wireless System (OWS) will be featured at the City of Tempe's "Cutting the Wires" ceremony, which will mark the formal availability of the nation's largest deployed city-wide Wi-Fi network. The ceremony will feature speeches from Senator John McCain, who recently introduced the Community Broadband Act of 2005, as well as speeches from Tempe city officials. The event will unveil the 40 square-mile "WAZTempe" network, which uses Strix Systems' multi-channel, multi-Rf, and multi-radio wireless mesh and was deployed by broadband telecommunications company MobilePro. As part of the event, technology demonstrations will feature Strix's ability to provide voice, video, and data over the network.

All interested parties who are not able to attend the event can participate in a live Webcast, which will begin at 1:00 p.m. PST on Monday, 11/28. The Webcast can be accessed directly at http://vectormax.com/live.

"While many cities have announced their plans to deploy wireless mesh networks, our city-wide deployment in Tempe is the first and largest of its kind to demonstrate not only the ability to provide data services to users, but advanced voice and video applications as well," said Nan Chen, VP of marketing at Strix Systems. "Strix's multi-channel, multi-RF, multi-radio system is the only solution that can provide these capabilities across multiple hops in the mesh, making it the highest-performing, most cost-effective solution for cities and countries to deploy ubiquitous wireless mesh networks."

The City of Tempe selected the Strix solution in order to support a true multi-use network, which will provide secure Wi-Fi access for businesses, residents, and guests, as well as a separate network for municipal workers. This tandem network will ensure that, while residents enjoy Wi-Fi access, every police car and fire truck in the city -- each of which will be equipped with a Wi-Fi enabled laptop -- will have an always-on connection to a private, secure network. At the event, Strix will demonstrate its technology as a Tempe fire truck broadcasts voice and data communications as it travels throughout the city.

Tempe selected Strix's Access/One Network OWS after a side by side trial deployment with a competing, single-radio mesh solution proved that the single-radio solution could not provide the necessary performance to handle real-time applications like voice and video. Unlike competing mesh products that use either single or dual radios, Strix's Access/One Network OWS supports up to six radios per node, providing dedicated high-speed wireless bandwidth for backhaul ingress, backhaul egress, and client connectivity. The Strix approach ensures the highest throughput and lowest latency over multiple hops, ensuring the highest performance for voice and video applications over the mesh while enabling easy and cost-effective future network expansion.
