Airport Surface Surveillance Equipment, Model X System Providing Enhanced Safety, Capacity and Efficiency
EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y., Oct. 1 - Sensis Corporation announced that its Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model X system (ASDE-X) at Charlotte Douglas International Airport is operational. ASDE-X uses a combination of surface movement radar, transponder multilateration and ADS-B sensors to provide air traffic controllers with an accurate picture of the location and identity of aircraft and vehicles on the airport surface. Mark Rosenker, Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, has stated that airport surface operations present some of the most challenging situations for pilots and controllers, and in many cases leave the least room for error. The improved situational awareness provided by ASDE-X enables controllers to more safely and efficiently manage movement on the airport surface.
"In addition to making it more challenging to managing traffic on the airport surface, growth in U.S. aviation is causing serious capacity problems at many airports, resulting in an increase in system-wide delays," said Tony Lo Brutto, Vice President and General Manager of Sensis Air Traffic Systems. "While increasing safety, ASDE-X will also help to alleviate delays by providing controllers, airlines and airports with a continuous picture of ground traffic bottlenecks at our nation's busiest airports."
In addition to providing controllers with a comprehensive picture of the airport surface, the ASDE-X system's conflict detection and alerting technology, Safety Logic, uses the most advanced algorithms available to detect and alert controllers to potential aircraft and vehicle collision situations. Further, ASDE-X supports future technologies such as ADS-B for a seamless transition to the next generation air traffic surveillance system.
The FAA is in the process of deploying the ASDE-X system to a total of 35 of the nation's airports. With the addition of Charlotte Douglas International Airport, the system is operational and commissioned at eleven airports.
