RPA Creates Process for Deburrring Beta C Titanium

RP Abrasives' process is quick, efficient and based on bead blasting or shot blasting. The process is more than four times faster than traditional hand deburring methods. By using a special media and low-pressure blasting techniques, RPA can remove all of the burrs without changing or damaging complex shapes and surfaces. This method does not interfere with nondestructive test methods, which are often used to test complex high-value parts before use. This allows manufacturers and end users to ensure that the parts as machined are complete and crack free.

Beta C. Titanium is known as ASTM grades 19 and 20. Other designations are AMS 4945, 4947 and 4948. It is also designated as MIL-T 9046 B3 and 9047. Beta C(TM) is a registered trademark of Carpenter Technologies. It is one of the lightest and strongest of the titanium alloys. It has good corrosion resistance, but poor abrasion resistance due to its tendency to gall and smear (gummy nature) as described in Carpenter's Data Sheet for Beta C(TM). This has made removing burrs that form during machining very difficult and time-consuming.

R. P. Abrasives has used this process on turbine wheels and can handle parts up to 4 feet in diameter.
