Pervasive Software's Btrieve Celebrates Silver Anniversary

AUSTIN, Texas, March 29: Pervasive Software(R) Inc. (NASDAQ:PVSW), a global value leader in embedded data management and integration software, today announced that since the launch of the first embedded database for applications 25 years ago, the fads of the "Me Generation" have long since faded, but the market need for flexible, scalable and reliable embedded data management is still going strong. As an innovative leader of the embedded database with a focus on small to mid-size businesses, Pervasive continues to provide ISVs and millions of their users worldwide with fast, highly reliable, low total-cost-of-ownership database solutions that have evolved with the times while supporting extensive backwards compatibility.

"Since 1982, we've addressed the need for embedded databases for ISV applications to remain flexible in the face of massive technology revolutions," said Gilbert van Cutsem, general manager of Database Products at Pervasive Software. "As data proliferates and the computing environment continues to evolve, it will be increasingly important for organizations to be able to reliably track and access their business-critical information in order to gain competitive advantage."

In 1982, at the beginning of the personal computer revolution, Pervasive predecessor SoftCraft released Btrieve(R) 1.0, the first of a quarter century's worth of blazing fast, reliable data management products for business users. Throughout the evolution of computing environments from desktop to peer-to-peer to client-server and the Web, Btrieve continued to lead the way, providing support for new environments and related operating systems often within a few months of their release. Btrieve's well known quality and strong developer base made it an attractive target for Novell, which acquired SoftCraft in 1987. Novell began shipping Btrieve with NetWare to cement its OS platform leadership at the beginning of the client-server boom of the late 1980s and early 1990s, and Btrieve's popularity with the ISV developer community continued to grow.

To ensure continued focus on database technology, SoftCraft founders Doug and Nancy Woodward separated from Novell to form Btrieve Technologies, Inc. (BTI) in 1994. BTI ushered in a new era of growth and development with several key product enhancements, including the wildly popular Btrieve 6.15 and support for the Microsoft NT operating system. The new focus culminated in an organizational name change-to Pervasive-to reflect a more worldwide presence, and a successful IPO followed in 1997. The eventual combination of SQL and Btrieve access in the same database remains unique in the industry today.

"By consistently offering a reliable embedded database solution capable of both increasing sophistication and broad application, operating system and hardware platform compatibility, Pervasive continues to help our worldwide partners position themselves for sustainable success in their own dynamic markets as they look toward the next 25 years," said John Farr, CEO and president of Pervasive Software. "Pervasive remains committed to supporting technology of the past while innovating with an eye on the future."
