OSRAM SYLVANIA Wins LightFair Technical Innovation Award for New PowerSHED Ballast

Company Sheds Light on Blackout Prevention with High Efficiency Demand Response Ballast

LAS VEGAS, May 29 - At the LightFair International 2008 trade show and conference, OSRAM SYLVANIA received a Technical Innovation Award for its QUICKTRONIC® PowerSHED(TM) High Efficiency Demand Response Ballast. The Technical Innovation Award, which was announced at the LFI Innovation Awards ceremony on Wednesday, recognizes the most significant advances in lighting technology and was awarded by a judging panel of lighting industry professionals.

OSRAM SYLVANIA continues to bring energy-efficient innovations to market with the introduction of the PowerSHED universal voltage ballast, which combines state-of-the-art, high efficiency three lamp operation with a low cost method of emergency demand response power reduction.

The PowerSHED Ballast is a high-efficiency, instant-start bi-level type with a built in power line carrier (PLC) signal receiver for automated dimming response. Until now, controlling fluorescent lighting loads required customized solutions with expensive hardware and installation. This PowerSHED load-shed ballast uses a building's existing wiring and avoids the cost and complexity associated with traditional lighting control methods.

Designed to receive the PLC signal from the lighting control panel, this Emergency Demand Response ballast will immediately shed up to 30 percent of its load. By relying on PLC, building owners can easily add demand response capabilities without the expense of pulling extra wires to the fixtures. The PLC injector system is adaptable to many control methods including manual switching, AC relays from building management systems or secure, internet-connected, remote units.

Each summer, electric utilities in metropolitan areas face periods of peak demand that approach or exceed available supplies and these can result in blackouts, crippling businesses, schools and general operations within a city, state or entire region. With this new technology system operators can trigger the load-shed sites via a communications source, such as the internet, to the lighting distribution panel where a power line signal is sent to individual ballasts. Sites can also be configured to accept a signal from telephone lines, radios, pagers, cell phones or through other wired protocols.

"The PowerSHED load-shed ballast system is a solution for those seeking to prevent costly peak power generation, as it can immediately and predictably reduce power consumption in response to peak demand alerts," said Jim Frey, OSRAM SYLVANIA ballast product marketing manager. "The Demand Response program will help cities conserve and monitor energy as well as help protect themselves from major blackouts or brownouts."

This universal voltage (120V-277V), high-efficiency ballast will permanently reduce lighting loads. Each three lamp fixture immediately saves up to 14 Watts when coupled with SYLVANIA SUPERSAVER® 28 Watt T8 lamps. The PowerSHED load-shed ballast makes the complete system far more efficient compared to first generation T8 systems. Supporting two or three lamp fixtures, the PowerSHED load-shed ballast includes lamp striation control. It features instant start technology and has a .87 ballast factor.
