Optek's Visible LED Lab Accurately Evaluates LED Specifications, Reliability

NEW YORK, NY (May 8, 2007) - Providing lighting design engineers with a complete LED solution, from designing to manufacturing to testing, TT electronics OPTEK Technology's in-house visible LED laboratory features an array of equipment and other resources to accurately assess products ranging from single LEDs to complex power LED assemblies.

According to Richard Saffa, vice president of OPTEK Technology's Visible LED Business Unit, a customer approached OPTEK with the need to convert an existing halogen lamp to an LED assembly. "With the use of the equipment in our lab, we were able to match the spot size, luminous flux and uniformity of the halogen lamp to the assembly, as well as increase the optical efficiency," said Saffa. "As a result, we were able to recommend a custom designed LED solution that fit exactly what the customer needed."

Each characteristic of an LED or LED assembly has significant implications, depending on the application, Saffa continued. OPTEK's lab has the equipment to assess variations over time and junction temperature in most common optical parameters, including dominant wavelength, color temperature and color rendering index.
OPTEK's visible LED laboratory equipment includes a large one-meter integrating sphere used to determine color temperature (CCT) and brightness (TLF); a thermal imaging camera to provide data for optimizing thermal management designs which enhance the lifespan and light output of power LED assemblies; a scanning electron microscope with a Princeton Gamma Tech X-ray analyzer for failure analysis; a luminous flux and wavelength tester to verify color and hue; and a spectroradiometer system accommodating wavelengths from 200nm to 780nm measuring the radiometric and photometric characteristics of LED assemblies of all shapes. The spectroradiometer system also includes a goniometer, CIE 127 Publication Condition A&B tube, and a 6" integrating sphere.

OPTEK will also provide customers with full comparison data, and invites them to be on-site to witness the testing first hand.
