NREL Names New Deputy Lab Director for Science and Technology
Dana Christensen managed energy programs at Oak Ridge National Lab
The U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory has appointed Dana C. Christensen as its new Deputy Laboratory Director for Science and Technology.
Dr. Christensen comes to NREL from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he has been Associate Laboratory Director for Energy and Engineering Services.
Dr. Christensen's "depth and breadth of energy science and management experience will be of great value as NREL accelerates its efforts to develop important new clean energy solutions to benefit the nation," NREL Director Dan Arvizu said.
Thomas Mason, director of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, said Christensen will be missed, having demonstrated strong leadership and a particular talent for leveraging opportunities with public and private partners.
Speaking on behalf of the Board of Directors of the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC, which operates NREL, Chairman Ron Townsend said, "Dana's organizational leadership, deep experience and strong record of accomplishment in science and technology are a fitting complement to NREL's Alliance Leadership Team."
In his most recent role at ORNL, Dr. Christensen was responsible for more than $350 million worth of programs for a variety of government and industrial sponsors in all dimensions of energy science and technology including energy efficiency and renewable energy.
Before his tenure at ORNL, Dr. Christensen was Principal Associate Laboratory Director for Threat Reduction at Los Alamos National Laboratories. He has 27 years of management experience in materials science, fossil and renewable energy, and scientific research in support of the U.S. DOE and other government agencies.
Dr. Christensen attended New Mexico State University, graduating with baccalaureate and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering. He also holds a master's in Business Administration from the University of New Mexico. He is the author of numerous publications on the science and technology of plutonium chemical processing.
Dr. Christensen will assume his official duties at NREL on November 1.
