New Clinical and Academic Reference Titles Add Depth to Ovid's e-Book Platform

Publishing Partnerships Enhance Content Offerings at Books@Ovid

NEW YORK, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Ovid Technologies, a global leader in electronic medical, scientific, and academic information research solutions, today announced it is adding more than 160 medical, scientific, and engineering titles from Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, Pharmaceutical Press, McGraw-Hill, and other leading publishers to Books@Ovid, its integrated e- books platform. These titles will be made available throughout the remainder of 2005, bringing the total number of electronic books on Books@Ovid to over 350.

New clinically-oriented books cover a wide range of medical specialties, such as neurology, endocrinology, infectious diseases, surgery, and cardiology, traditionally a strong content category for Ovid. Some key new titles include Joslin's Diabetes Mellitus and Hospital Epidemiology of Infection from Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, Clarke's Analysis of Drugs and Poisons from Pharmaceutical Press, and McGraw-Hill's Williams Obstetrics and Schwartz's Principles of Surgery.

"Partnering with Ovid was an obvious decision for us," said Charles Fry, Director of Publications for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, which operates and manages Pharmaceutical Press, publishers of Martindale: The Complete Drug Reference, also available on Ovid. "Institutions and corporations are increasingly adopting an e-book solution to support the research and work of healthcare professionals, researchers, and students. We're pleased to include our titles on Ovid's Books@Ovid platform, providing us with a sophisticated online option with which we can reach an even wider audience."

Books@Ovid already offers the Internet's most extensive collection of core clinical titles. These include Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine and Hurst's The Heart from McGraw-Hill; Cancer: Principles and Practice of Oncology, The Lippincott Manual of Nursing Practice, and Kaplan & Sadock's Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry from Lippincott Williams & Wilkins; and the Oxford Textbook of Medicine from Oxford University Press.

In an effort to serve Ovid's diverse user base, which includes students and faculty in the academic community, new reference works in humanities, social sciences, and engineering are also being added. Among these are the Dictionary of Engineering, Concise Encyclopedia of Environmental Science, and Microfluid Mechanics from McGraw-Hill.

"These new titles add tremendous value to our platform. By partnering with key publishers, we can expand our comprehensive portfolio of e-books that we offer our medical and academic customers," said Scott MacFarland, Vice President, Publisher Relations & Content Operations for Ovid. "Our innovative e-book solution offers professionals and researchers anytime, anywhere access to comprehensive, authoritative clinical and scholarly material."

Launched in 2000, Books@Ovid forms one component of a completely integrated Ovid content repository. Advanced linking functionality enables users to seamlessly move from the book's chapters, table of contents, figures, and tables, to full-text journal articles and bibliographic references to which they have access as part of their Ovid subscription, as well as external websites referenced within the books and journal articles. Special features include back-of-the-book index links, subject and title browsing, natural language searching, and a single, expandable table of contents.
