NEMA Applauds Launch Of American Business Coalition For DOHA

Press release date: Oct 25, 2005

ROSSLYN, Va., October 25, 2005. The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) today applauded the launch of the American Business Coalition for Doha (ABCDoha) to support the current round of World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations. In advance of today's press conference featuring U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman, NEMA President Evan Gaddis said, "We welcome this new coalition because we strongly believe that the WTO's Doha Development Agenda of trade negotiations offers a tremendous opportunity to extend the benefits of free trade in electrical goods to developing and developed economies alike." Gaddis added that eliminating worldwide tariffs on electrical goods is a fundamental NEMA goal and that "elimination of tariffs on electrical equipment in particular would enhance the ability of developing economies to build modern infrastructures and spur overall economic growth."

NEMA's engagement in the Doha round of negotiations is well established. It is a founding member of the National Association of Manufacturers' Zero Tariff Coalition, and a participant in several multinational industry delegations to the WTO in Geneva. NEMA has taken part in numerous exchanges between U.S. officials and foreign counterparts. The association has also welcomed the recent proposal by the governments of the United States, Japan, Korea, and Singapore to pursue a WTO sectoral tariff elimination initiative for electrical and electronic equipment.

NEMA is the largest trade association representing the interests of U.S. electrical equipment manufacturers, whose worldwide annual sales exceed $120 billion. The 400 member companies of NEMA manufacture products used in the generation, transmission, distribution, control, and use of electricity. These products are used in utility, industrial, commercial, institutional and residential installations. The Association's Medical Products Division represents manufacturers of medical diagnostic imaging equipment including MRI, CT, x-ray, ultrasound, and nuclear products. ###
