Training Organizations Partner on Industrial Paint Applicator Program
HOUSTON (Feb. 8, 2007) - NACE International and the National Center for Construction Education and
Research (NCCER), two leading providers of industry education, training, and certification, are joining forces
to deliver a comprehensive industrial coating applicator training and certification program.
The NCCER/NACE Industrial Coatings Applicator Training and Certification Program follows the
NACE/SSPC standard - "Industrial Coating and Lining Application Specialist Qualification." Slated for a 2007
release, the written standard will define levels of training for all industrial painting personnel. It includes criteria
for the knowledge, skills, and experience required of an application specialist for preparing surfaces and
applying protective coatings to steel and concrete surfaces of complex industrial structures.
"NACE training programs have grown substantially in recent years, and we are consistently asked for an
applicator training program that can be delivered outside the traditional classroom setting," said Tony Keane,
NACE Executive Director. "NACE sought a training partner with credentials in craft training to meet the
special hands-on requirements of this workforce, and it was apparent that NCCER is the organization with the
most experience and success."
Deidre Dunkin, President of Dunkin and Bush, an industrial coating applications company, enthusiastically
endorsed the partnership and training program. "Coating application personnel are often the first line of defense
in protecting structures from the effects of corrosion; therefore, quality training of applicators is key to our
company and the industry as a whole," said Dunkin.
The NCCER/NACE Industrial Coatings Applicator Training and Certification Program will include material
from NCCER's Core Curriculum for construction-related training. The curricula is developed by subject matter
experts, ensuring exceptional training that meets or exceeds industry standards.
"The key to combating the diminishing workforce is to build skilled craft professionals and ensure the
portability of their skills across the industry," said NCCER President Don Whyte. "This program will bring us
one step closer to accomplishing that goal."
The first two levels of the coating applicator training program, designed to meet the needs of the upcoming
industry standard, are scheduled for completion by February 2008. NACE and NCCER have entered into
discussions for a third level in the near future.
