Integrates Mitel voice communications and Networked Business Solutions with Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 and associated applications

OTTAWA, March 1 / -- Mitel® today announced the general availability of the Mitel 3300 Live Business Gateway providing seamless integration between the Mitel 3300 IP Communications Platform (ICP), legacy communications solutions, Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 and the Microsoft Office Communicator 2005 integrated communications client. This announcement follows a series of successful pilot implementations with partners and customers including Logista Solutions, Watson Communications, Allstream, ICS solutions in the U.K., Central Telecom in Europe, a large manufacturer of heavy equipment in North America and a global financial services company.

"We are delighted that Mitel has vigorously embraced Microsoft Office Live Communications Server and Microsoft Office Communicator," said Marc Sanders, senior product manager, unified communications group, Microsoft. "Our combined solution integrates telephony, presence and collaboration features into the desktop experience, providing easy-to-use, flexible and secure real- time communications capabilities for our customers."

The Live Business Gateway is an integral component of the 3300 ICP that enables users simple access to presence and collaboration applications throughout their business. It leverages their existing investments (legacy environment) and simplifies federation between businesses. With the Mitel Live Business Gateway users can invoke telephony and presence features from within the Microsoft Office suite of applications and from within Mitel applications including Mitel Customer Interaction Solutions and Mitel NuPoint Messenger(TM) IP.

"Mitel is taking the lead in providing multiple commercially-available presence-enabled applications on the Microsoft Office Live Communications Server platform," said Don Smith, Mitel's chief executive officer. "Combined, our solution provides for a full, rich, standards-based federated collaboration environment that supports in the moment business decisions and improved customer interaction."

Mitel's Live Business Gateway seamlessly integrates voice and user/device presence capabilities into the powerful real-time collaboration that Microsoft Office Live Communications Server and Microsoft Office Communicator bring to business applications such as the Microsoft Office System. The Live Business Gateway allows Microsoft Office Communicator and other Microsoft applications to access Mitel's IP-based telephony infrastructure and allows Microsoft Office Communicator to connect users external to the enterprise through the public network. It also enables eight-party ad hoc conference-calling among Microsoft Office Communicator clients, further leveraging businesses' investment in Microsoft and Mitel communications solutions.

"We are pleased to collaborate with Mitel during the successful testing of their Live Business Gateway platform at Allstream," said Eric Fletcher, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Allstream. "Through the Live Business Gateway, our Microsoft Office Live Communications Server customers will now be able to seamlessly integrate telephony on their Microsoft desktop using Microsoft Office Communicator. This allows Allstream clients to reduce overall communications costs by simplifying and converging their IT and telephony infrastructure, and at the same time, enjoy productivity gains through the solution's rich set of collaboration tools. This is another example of Allstream's commitment to deliver innovative IP-based solutions for large enterprises and mid-market customers to help them compete better in their businesses."

"Enterprises are eager to gain increased business value through the integration of communications and business applications," said Jeffrey Snyder, Research Vice President, Enterprise Communications, Gartner Research. "The use of open standards makes these integrations more reliable, and productizing such integrations allows enterprises to realize that business value more quickly."

Based on Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), Extensible Markup Language (XML) and ISO Computer Supported Telecommunications Applications (CSTA) standards, the Live Business Gateway enables all 3300 ICP controllers to inter- operate with Microsoft Office Live Communications Server and the Microsoft Office Communicator client using the CSTA and SIP standards encoded in XML. As a Live Business Gateway the 3300 ICP also offers the features of Microsoft Office Live Communications Server and Microsoft Office Communicator to legacy PBX environments and can deliver Microsoft Office Live Communications Server enabled Mitel applications extending the Microsoft presence and federation capability throughout Mitel's applications portfolio.
