Automotive Suppliers Speak Out in Washington at MEMA Legislative Summit



RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. - More than 130 top level executives from aftermarket, heavy duty and original equipment suppliers attended the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association's (MEMA) 4th Annual Legislative Summit in Washington, D.C., May 16-17.

The Summit began with the keynote address on May 16 by Dave McCurdy, president of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, who urged members to invite congressional delegations to visit their manufacturing facilities, allowing government leaders to "see first-hand how much technology is involved in today's vehicles."

Stephen Northrup, senior government relations director, Arent Fox, provided attendees with an overview of health care in relation to government policy, saying, "The outlook for broad based health care reforms in the current session is bleak." However, he noted, "Health care reform will be a huge issue in the primaries and in the general election."

The Summit's opening day concluded with the Congressional Reception & Supplier Fair at the Cannon House Office Building. Members of Congress attending the event included: Rep. Jason Altmire (D-Pa.), Rep. Michael Arcuri (D-N.Y.), Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Rep. Robert Cramer (D-Ala.), Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-N.C.), Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Rep. Dale Kildee (D-Mich.), Rep. Joe Knollenberg (R-Mich.), Rep. Don Manzullo (R-Ill), Rep. William Sali (R-Idaho) and Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-Ohio).

Members exhibited the latest automotive and heavy duty technology at the Supplier Fair. Companies participating were: ArvinMeritor Inc., Bergstrom Inc., Continental Automotive Systems, Delphi Corp., EnTire Solutions, The Gates Corp., Gentex, Hella, Inksure, PPG, Robert Bosch Corp., Schrader Electronics and TRW Automotive.

The Summit reconvened with a breakfast session on May 17. Sens. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and George Voinovich (R-Ohio) were honored for their work on behalf of the motor vehicle parts supplier industry with the "Joseph M. Magliochetti Industry Champion" award.

Following the breakfast session, members visited legislators on Capitol Hill. The Summit concluded with a presentation by Dennis Fitzgibbons, majority staff director, House Energy and Commerce Committee.
