MDS Continues Work Toward EU RoHS Compliance

ROCHESTER, NY (July 6, 2006) - Microwave Data Systems (MDS), a world leader in industrial, wireless, networking solutions with applications in the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), automation, telecommunications, public safety, and online transactional markets, today provided an update to the company's nearly two-year initiative to become compliant with a significant environmental directive set forth by the European Union (EU).

Although not a global mandate, in order to do its part to improve the environment by reducing toxic substances, MDS is striving to meet new requirements on existing product platforms and new products will comply.

The Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) directive sets restrictions on the amounts of six hazardous substances-lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBBs, and PBDEs. Any of which may be present in MDS products.

While the directive establishes basic requirements and a framework for responsibility for compliance, implementation of the directives is left largely to the governments of the EU member states. MDS has taken the following initial steps toward compliancy:

o Assessment of our product portfolio for compliance to RoHS.

o Evaluation of the availability of acceptable parts and implications for product lines in production.

o Redesign of current product lines with compliant parts, where practical.

o Design of new products with RoHS compliant parts.
