Mazak Canada to Feature New CNC at MMTS 2016

Multi-tasking and full 5-axis machines will demonstrate the power and capabilities of SmoothX

FLORENCE, Ky. – At the Montreal Manufacturing Technology Show, attendees will experience the power and capabilities of Mazak’s new MAZATROL SmoothX CNC demonstrated on the company’s INTEGREX i-200 Multi-Tasking Machine and on its full 5-axis VERTICAL CENTER UNIVERSAL (VCU) 500A 5X Vertical Machining Center. Also during the show that takes place at the Place Bonaventure in Montreal, Canada, May 16-18, Mazak will showcase the Done In One® part processing productivity of its QUICK TURN UNIVERSAL (QTU) 350MSY MultiTasking Machine in booth 136.

The new MAZATROL SmoothX CNC is a key element – along with new machine hardware and servo systems – of Mazak’s SMOOTH TECHNOLOGY. As a dramatic evolution in the advancement of machine tools, SMOOTH TECHNOLOGY is a complete process-performance platform that spans the entire part-production landscape from programming and setup to metal removal operations and automation to monitoring and data collection/transfer.

The MAZATROL SmoothX CNC’s processing capability is four times faster than its fastest CNC predecessors. With such high performance and several new advanced industry-first functions, the control allows shops to shorten machining cycle times, especially in fine increment programs for simultaneous 5-axis machining and free-form die-mold machining.

INTEGREX i-200

With the MAZATROL SmoothX and simultaneous 5-axis capabilities, the small-footprint INTEGREX i-200 brings maximum versatility, high precision and throughput to complex part applications. The machine combines the abilities of a high-powered turning center and full-function machining center to produce medium- and large-sized workpieces in single setups.

The machine employs a headstock with a 203 mm (8") chuck and 76 mm (3") diameter bore mounted on a 22 kW (30 hp), 5,000-rpm integrated spindle motor for handling a wide range of applications, from heavy-duty cutting at low speed to high-speed cutting of nonferrous materials.

A vertically mounted milling spindle provides 22 kW (30 hp), 12,000 rpm and a rotating B-axis range of -30 degrees to +240 degrees. A unique roller cam drive for the B axis ensures higher accuracy and rigidity, while providing zero backlash. A 36-tool (72-tool optional) magazine allows for fast tool changes and provides ample tooling for continuous part processing.

VCU 500A 5X

Mazak’s simple but innovative VCU 500A 5X with MAZATROL SmoothX features a trunnion-style rotary/tilt table that allows for the accurate, cost-effective processing of small complex parts via full 5-axis machining. The table is constructed with durable high-speed roller gear cam drive technology for high torsional rigidity and positioning accuracy. It tilts +95 degrees/-45 degrees in the B axis and rotates 360 degrees in the C axis and accommodates workpieces weighing up to 199 kg (440 lbs).

The VCU 500A 5Z, manufactured in Mazak’s North American plant, comes standard equipped with a robust, high-performance CAT-40, 10,000-rpm spindle that delivers exceptional metal removal capabilities in all common materials, including steel, aluminum and cast iron. Optional speeds of 12,000 rpm and 20,000 rpm are available to address a variety of part production requirements.

Axis travels for the machine measure 505 mm (19.88") in X, 505 mm (19.88") in Y and 509 mm (20.07") in Z, allowing it to accommodate part sizes up to 500 mm (19.68") in diameter and 305 mm (12") high. Rapid traverse speeds for these three linear axes are 2400 mm/min (945 ipm).

A standard 30-tool magazine ensures continuous machining operation, while an optional 40-tool magazine helps further increase production flexibility. The machine’s automatic tool changer provides fast tool exchanges for an overall reduction in non-cut times. Furthermore, reliable tool monitoring on the VCU 500A 5X maximizes production efficiency and lowers operating costs through early problem detection.

QTU 350MSY

Also manufactured in the Mazak North American plant, the QTU 350MSY delivers single-setup, Done In One part-processing capability, making it well suited for the automotive, consumer electronics, contract manufacturing and medical industries. The machine employs two turning spindles, a milling turret with a rotary tool spindle for multitasking operations and Y axis, off-centerline machining capability.

An integral spindle/motor headstock on the QTU 350MSY provides extreme rigidity in heavy-duty machining and yields unmatched precision in high-speed applications. A variable-speed AC motor powers the headstock so there is zero blacklash. A full circumference C-axis headstock brake design provides high-accuracy positioning within 0.0001 degrees.

The special servo-driven turret on the QTU 350MSY offers multiple tool configurations for easy changeover. It features a roller gear cam drive system that ensures smooth high-speed, high-accuracy indexing motion. The roller gear design eliminates the need for expensive components, such as curvic/index couplings. Without couplings, the turret can include up to 24 small tools as well as program an infinite number of index positions without having to make any changes on the turret housing.
